Job Description

At Mahaska Health we are looking for a dedicated Oncology Care, CMA (Certified Medical Assistant) is to be responsible for the delivery of patient care through the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation, but may not give medical advice without collaboration with the provider. Also directs and guides patient teaching and assists the physician/nurse practitioner/physician assistant in all aspects, while maintaining standards of professional nursing in accordance with the established methods and procedures of Mahaska Health and the Medical Group.

Essential Job Functions include but are not limited to:

  • All duties will be performed per the scope of practice and clinic policy.
  • Assesses and documents physical, psychological, and social dimensions of patients at the clinic.
  • Prepares for and assists with office procedures.
  • Establishes treatment priorities based on medical and nursing diagnosis.
  • Documents nursing intervention and patient response.
  • Accurately prepares and administers medications as directed by the provider.
  • Documents and reports on adverse effects of medications.
  • Properly documents immunizations and medications.
  • Performs procedures such as (but not limited to) injections, immunizations, phlebotomy, tympanograms, EKGs, vision screening, etc.
  • Makes referrals to other providers and facilities as directed by the provider.
  • Prioritize and return phone calls effectively and in a timely manner.
  • Reports test results to patients with instructions from the provider in a timely manner.
  • Use the Electronic Medical Record system according to established guidelines.
  • Monitors and records dates/outdates in sample medication closet.
  • Responsible for keeping exam rooms clean and stocked, and replenishing supplies and meds as indicated.
  • Provides patient and family education at their level of understanding.
  • Organizes workload effectively to accomplish patient care in a timely manner.

  • Perform other duties as assigned to support patient care, departmental operations, and organizational goals.

Job Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • A graduate from an accredited medical assistant program and currently certified as a Medical Assistant in the state of Iowa.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills, with the ability to quickly diagnose and resolve issues.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to effectively train and support end users.
  • Knowledge of data protection regulations, such as HIPAA, and experience implementing security measures to protect patient data.
  • Attention to detail and commitment to data accuracy and patient privacy.
  • Ability to prioritize workload effectively and work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Required to be current in BLS (Basic Life Support) by the standards of the American Heart Association.
  • Will be required to show proof of having completed Mandatory Reporter course at the time of hire or attend within 6 months of the start date.
  • Must adhere to all training requirements as mandated by Federal, State, and Professional licensure and regulatory standards.
  • Understand and comply with the requirements of MH’s Compliance Program, including, but not limited to the Code of Conduct, the Compliance Policy, Mahaska Health Experience Book and all supporting policies for compliance, and compliance plans affecting specific duties and responsibilities.
  • Ability to perform the essential work functions of this job, with or without reasonable accommodation.

The work environment includes, but is not limited to:

  • Work is performed in a well‑lighted, well‑ventilated clinical environment, including exam rooms, nursing stations, diagnostic areas, and patient care spaces.
  • CMAs manage a workflow that may involve high‑stress or fast‑paced situations, particularly during peak patient volumes, urgent clinical needs, or unexpected schedule changes.
  • Scheduled hours generally follow the posted departmental schedule; however, extended hours may be required during periods of high patient volume, staffing shortages, or operational needs.
  • The position may require working holidays, weekends, or occasional on‑call shifts, depending on departmental coverage requirements.
  • Frequent interaction with patients, families, providers, nurses, and other hospital departments requires professionalism, empathy, and strong communication skills.
  • Depending on departmental needs, the role may be on‑site, hybrid, or remote‑eligible for specific administrative or telehealth‑support tasks.
  • Physical requirements include standing and walking for extended periods, lifting up to 25–50 lbs as needed, assisting with patient mobility, bending, reaching, and performing repetitive clinical tasks such as vital signs, specimen collection, and equipment setup.
