The Opportunity:
CACI is looking for a Materials Engineering Subject Matter Expert (SME) to provide part-time, on-call support to manufacturers across the Maritime Industrial Base (MIB). This role is ideal for a highly experienced materials engineer who thrives in solving complex, real-world manufacturing challenges and driving measurable improvements in production performance.
In this position, you will engage directly with manufacturers to diagnose and resolve materials-related issues impacting production, quality, and delivery. You will apply deep technical expertise to improve first pass yield, optimize material selection and processing, and enhance overall manufacturing efficiency. This role offers the opportunity to work across a diverse set of industries and production environments, contributing to critical national defense initiatives.
Responsibilities:
Provide expert consultation on an as-needed basis to manufacturers facing complex materials-related production challenges, including material processing, property analysis, material design, and safety considerations
Conduct periodic on-site assessments of manufacturing processes to identify opportunities for improvement in first pass yield, quality, and on-time delivery
Analyze production data and perform root cause analysis for material defects, failures, and inefficiencies
Develop and recommend corrective actions to resolve manufacturing issues and improve process performance
Collaborate with client engineering teams to implement solutions and monitor effectiveness over time
Advise on material selection, processing techniques, and quality control measures to optimize performance and reliability
Troubleshoot critical production bottlenecks related to material properties and behavior
Prepare and deliver clear, concise reports and presentations outlining findings, recommendations, and outcomes
Participate in periodic review sessions with stakeholders to assess progress and identify additional improvement 0pportunities
Stay current on emerging materials science and manufacturing technologies, applying relevant advancements to client challenges
Provide remote support as needed, with availability for occasional on-site visits, including time-sensitive or emergent issues
Qualifications:
Required:
Must be a U.S. Citizen with a minimum of active DoD Secret clearance
M.S. or Ph.D. in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, or a closely related field
Minimum of 7 years of hands-on experience in materials engineering within manufacturing environments
In-depth knowledge of metals, polymers, composites, and ceramics, including processing methods and applications
Strong understanding of material properties, characterization techniques, and failure analysis
Demonstrated experience conducting root cause analysis and implementing corrective actions
Proficiency in data analysis and statistical methods
Strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills, with the ability to diagnose complex technical issues
Excellent communication skills, with the ability to clearly present technical information to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
Desired:
Experience supporting multiple industries, such as aerospace, automotive, electronics, or medical devices
Familiarity with advanced manufacturing techniques, including additive manufacturing and precision machining
Experience with materials modeling and simulation tools
Six Sigma certification (Green Belt or higher)
Knowledge of lean manufacturing principles and continuous improvement methodologies
Publication record in peer-reviewed journals or technical conference proceedings
Demonstrated success in securing patents or contributing to intellectual property development
Prior experience in consulting or providing technical advisory support to manufacturing

There are a host of factors that can influence final salary including, but not limited to, geographic location, Federal Government contract labor categories and contract wage rates, relevant prior work experience, specific skills and competencies, education, and certifications. The proposed salary range for this position is:
$90,300-$189,600
