Pay Range

Hiring Range: $28.55 - $34.25 Per Hour

Pay Range: $28.55 - $39.96 Per Hour

The Central Plant Systems Technician II leads and participates in operating, adjusting, servicing, maintaining and repairing automated heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning (HVAC) and associated systems and equipment. This position monitors and takes routine or emergency actions upon receipt of alarms, requests for services or when supported systems instrumentation indicates problems.

Essential Functions:

  • Coordinates and schedules Central Plant operations and maintenance activities with staff and affected facilities;

  • Develops and coordinates operating procedures, maintenance schedules, and staffing needs with facilities engineering and facility managers;

  • Operates and adjusts automated/computerized HVAC systems, including seasonal changeovers and temperature settings;

  • Sets energy-management operating limits and temperature parameters for the HVAC control system;

  • Installs, programs, maintains, and repairs EMCS controllers and prepares cost estimates for controller installation or replacement;

  • Responds to and resolves heating, cooling, and ventilation inquiries and complaints within County complex buildings;

  • Performs or directs operator-level maintenance, servicing, and repairs of Central Plant equipment and related systems;

  • Reviews water-sampling test data, identifies trends, and directs adjustments to water-treatment processes;

  • Monitors fire alarms for County facilities, reports emergencies, and shuts down HVAC and related systems in affected areas;

  • Maintains equipment, system, facility, and shift operation logs and prepares required periodic and special reports;

  • Orders parts and materials, monitors expenditures, and compiles annual operating cost data with budget recommendations;

  • Assists in planning and executing Central Plant modifications, major repairs, and may assign, train, and evaluate subordinate staff.

Minimum Qualifications:

Six years of experience in heating and air-conditioning plant operations and maintenance INCLUDING one year of lead or supervisory experience in an HVAC plant setting. (Supervisory/lead experience may be concurrent.)

(Relevant experience and/or education from an accredited college or university may be substituted.)

OR:

Three years with Pima County in a Central Plant Systems Technician I or related position as determined by the department head at the time of recruitment.

Preferred Qualifications (Be specific in describing your experience in your application. Ensure the descriptions provided illustrate your competencies, specifically addressing the required and preferred qualifications.):

  • Minimum two (2) years experience in the operation or maintenance of central plant heating, ventilating, air-conditioning equipment, and associated systems.

  • Minimum two (2) years experience monitoring the function and operation of building automation systems.

  • Experience with/knowledge of using basic computer systems (Outlook, Excel, and Word, Delta and Alerton control systems).

  • Experience with/knowledge of maintaining comprehensive records of work performed modifications to equipment or systems and related logs.

The successful applicant will be subject to a 39-month DOT Motor Vehicle Record review todetermineapplicant’s suitability tooperatecounty vehiclesin accordance withPima County administrative procedures. Failure to obtain andmaintainthe required licenses and certifications shall be grounds for termination. Any offer of employment resulting from this recruitment is contingent upon Fleet Services’ review and approval of the candidate’s driving record.  

Special Notice ItemsThe ability to obtain a jail pass is required. The Countyrequirespre-employment background checks. Successful candidates will receive a post-offer, pre-employment background screening to include verification of work history, education, and criminal conviction history.
