Provides direct support of surgical procedures and staff in the coordination and availability of inventory, equipment, and instruments needed for efficient operation.

Experience

  • 3 years of experience as a surgical technologist, sterile processing technician, or other surgical services role

Preferred Qualifications

  • One year of experience in a leadership role
  • Certified Surgical Technologist (CST)

Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent and graduation from recognized sterile processing technician school or equivalent years of experience.

Certification Summary

  • HSPA: Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) or CBSPD: Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT)

  • Basic computer skills
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills

Job Responsibilities

  • Performs decontamination, inspection, and cleaning of surgical instruments, flexible scopes, and respiratory devices according to manufacturer’s instructions for use.
  • Performs and oversees center core functions and prioritizes work based on surgical cases.
  • Maintains reliable and timely communication with operating room staff to manage turnovers and minimize immediate use steam sterilization.
  • Uses sterile processing chemicals according to manufacturer’s instructions for use.
  • Dons and doffs appropriate personal protection equipment and routinely inspects equipment testing documentation for accuracy.
  • Coordinates procurement of specialty items needed for surgery.
  • Assembles accurate and complete surgical trays.
  • Coordinates sterilizer and equipment monitoring.
  • Leads responses to potential and actual sterilization process failures.
  • Reviews schedule for coordination of necessary items for surgical cases.
  • Participates with and monitors accuracy and timely assembling of case carts for emergent/urgent and elective cases.
  • Supports operating room functions in the sterile core.
  • Maintains surgical technologist skills to troubleshoot instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during surgical procedures.
  • Opens operating rooms aseptically as needed.
  • Conducts operating room services rounds, capturing opportunities and methods of improvement.
  • Precepts technicians in all aspects of sterilization process and activity in operation of Sterile Processing department.
  • Onboards all staff to center core.
  • Participates in immediate use steam sterilization reduction program.
  • Fosters positive working relationships across departments and campuses with patients, physicians, families, visitors, coworkers, and vendors.
  • Complies with all applicable regulations, standards, and recommendations.
  • Follows hospital and departmental safety instructions, policies, and procedures.
  • Attends 75% of staff and leadership meetings/communication and job-related educational opportunities.
