Job Duties

Directly reports to the Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery Superintendent in Suffolk. This hands-on, working on-site position is responsible for leading, supervising, and managing Cemetery Caretakers (Senior/Team Leads) and Maintenance Technician; maintains all operational ground equipment and all operational aspects of the cemetery in Suffolk. Complies with the cemeteries standard operating procedures (SOPs) and the cemeteries operational policies.

  • This position is a member of the Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery Management Team, responsible for the safe operation of the cemetery grounds and burial processes in coordination with the Cemeteries Director, Cemetery Superintendent and Cemetery Administration Manager.
  • Responsible for verification of each grave/cremation/memorial site located at the cemetery prior to opening, in addition will verify placement of the temporary memorial marker and document completion.
  • Responsible for training staff in the proper utilization of section maps to locate, verify and open/close grave/cremations sites and proper placement of memorials as directed in the cemeteries standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Responsible for the supervision of direct subordinates to safely perform all daily tasks while maintaining operational tempo and utilizing all cemetery light and heavy equipment for the purpose of making the cemetery function in a methodical manner.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned by the Cemetery Superintendent/Cemeteries Director in matters concerning the veteran's cemetery.

Minimum Qualifications

Must be able to work in an outdoor environment, through all-weather conditions. Responsible for managing cemetery grounds maintenance crew, completing performance management evaluations and performing data entry tasks. Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite. Familiar with turf (grass/sod) management to include trees/shrubbery and flower bed care. Experience in building maintenance and general repair work. Must be experienced in maintaining a preventive maintenance program and supply inventory. Exceptional communication, decision making and coaching skills. Must be able to operate in a fast-tempo environment, building and developing team members.

Additional Considerations

Experience with ground and building maintenance, cemetery operation and/or mechanical repair work is preferred.
