WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW (Job Overview):

Under limited supervision, process and cryopreserve Cellular Therapy products both in a laboratory and in a cleanroom (GMP manufacturing). Products may include the following: Peripheral Blood Progenitor Cells (HPCs/PBMCs), Mononuclear cells (MNC), Packed Red Blood Cells (pRBC).

WHERE YOUR CAREER IS A FORCE FOR GOOD (Key Responsibilities):

  • Perform the basic level procedures/methods and testing currently performed on Cellular Therapy products: mononuclear cell quantification (automated and manual/differentials), processing and cryopreservation (controlled rate freezing), liquid nitrogen storage, thawing or cryopreserved products, cell viability, product sterility testing, environmental monitoring, as well as other procedures that may be defined and performed as needed.
  • Perform the basic level procedures/methods for Contract Manufacturing products: Blood product Manufacturing in cleanrooms under GMP conditions, CBC (automated), endotoxin testing, sterility testing, environmental monitoring, as well as other procedures that may be defined and performed as needed.
  • Arrange and follow up on the receipt or delivery of cellular therapy products from hospitals, clinical sites, to the Red Cross or from the Red Cross, as needed. Distribute blood samples for testing to applicable internal or external laboratories. May contact other departments and/or outside agencies to resolve problems. Maintain an accurate inventory of Cellular Therapy product supplies as well as contract manufacturing supplies.
  • Assist with the review and interpretation of final results. May assist with the preparation and review of the final reports, written or electronic. Maintain, edit and review computer and manual records to assure accurate record keeping. Maintain accurate, legible and complete records. Document and log accurately and concurrently laboratory activities and patient/donor testing.
  • Perform daily equipment maintenance checks as directed. Perform routine maintenance, troubleshooting, repair/vendor communication, and validation of laboratory equipment and software maintenance.
  • Participate in working on special projects assigned to analyze and summarize testing data. Assist in training personnel.
  • Assure that all laboratory activities are performed to follow the American Red Cross SOPs, state and federal regulations – including CFRs, local standard operating procedures, and FACT standards.

WHAT YOU NEED TO SUCCEED (Minimum Qualifications):

  • A bachelor's degree in a Biotech/Biological Science or Chemistry is required.
  • 1 year of commercial/clinical laboratory experience or equivalent combination of education and related experience required. Preferentially, this should include either tissue culture /research in a GMP environment or blood banking and/or Hematology laboratory experience.
  • Knowledge of applicable principles, concepts, practices, and standards.
  • Good interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Basic proficiency in the use of a personal computer, word-processing, spreadsheet applications, and database applications when applicable.
  • Must be able to comply with the company's personal hygiene standards as they apply to aseptic processing.
  • Complete sterile gowning training/qualification and aseptic process qualification (personal media fill) as well as annual/semiannual re-qualification as a core competency requirement of employment in this role.
  • Ability to work on a team.
  • Travel: May involve variable locations and some travel.

WHAT WILL GIVE YOU THE COMPETITIVE EDGE (Preferred Qualifications):

  • Medical Laboratory Technologist (ASCP) certification preferred.

Physical Requirements

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. You must be able to stand for long periods of time, repeat the same movements, use your hands to handle, control or feel objects, tools or controls. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. This job requires the ability to hear and speak clearly. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 15 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds. The work environment will consist of moderate noise. The employee must be able to react quickly using hands, fingers or feet. This job may require the employee to be able to bend, stretch, twist or reach out. This position will require the ability to use stomach and lower back muscles to support the body for long periods of time and the ability to keep or regain the body’s balance or stay upright when in an unstable position. Employee must be able to frequently use one or two hands to grasp, move or assemble objects.

The salary range for this position is: $28‐$32 per hour.

Other factors that may be used to determine your actual salary may include your specific skills, how many years of experience you have, and comparison to other employees already in this role.
