The Brown Bag Bus of the YMCA of Greater Louisville is a one-of-a-kind initiative to combat the effects of childhood hunger in Louisville, KY.  Brown Bag Bus staff will help provide food assistance to children within food deserts in underserved communities. The CDL Driver safely operates the Brown Bag Bus and supports mobile meal service execution across assigned community stops. This role is responsible for vehicle readiness, safe driving, route adherence, bus security, fueling, and coordination with on-board staff to ensure meals, equipment, and records arrive on time and in compliance with program requirements. The CDL Driver helps create a dependable, safe, and welcoming experience for children, youth, volunteers, and community partners while protecting the vehicle and upholding Summer Food Service Program expectations.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Operate the Brown Bag Bus safely and professionally on assigned routes while complying with CDL requirements, traffic laws, and organizational driving expectations.
- Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections; document vehicle condition, report safety concerns promptly, and verify the bus is ready for service each day.
- Arrive on schedule for loading, departure, site service, and return to storage location to support dependable stop timing and service delivery.
- Transport meals, supplies, signage, and enrichment materials in a manner that protects food safety, equipment condition, and service readiness.
- Coordinate closely with the Site Lead regarding route timing, stop access, changes in conditions, and any operational issues that affect service.
- Secure the bus whenever unattended, including windows, doors, equipment, and key-control procedures established for the vehicle.
- Fuel the bus at driver discretion before the tank falls below one-quarter full and report any fueling or mileage information required by the program.
- Maintain a clean and orderly driver area and support general bus readiness for daily operation, inspections, and public-facing appearances.
- Communicate immediately regarding delays, accidents, mechanical issues, unsafe conditions, or incidents involving children, staff, food, or the vehicle.
- Support site setup and breakdown as needed while maintaining primary responsibility for transportation safety and vehicle stewardship.
- Participate in mock runs, training, and readiness activities to ensure launch preparedness and ongoing operational reliability.
- Model calm, respectful, child-safe behavior and represent the Brown Bag Bus professionally in neighborhoods, schools, and partner locations.
- Storage and key control: driver follows established key check-in/check-out and securing procedures.
- Fueling and security: driver is responsible for refueling; bus should not be allowed to drop below one-quarter tank.
- Must be available Monday-Friday for route service, pre-launch training, mock service runs, and occasional community events as assigned.

QualificationsKNOW HOW/REQUIREMENTS:
- Valid CDL appropriate for assigned vehicle operation, with acceptable driving record and ability to meet organizational driving standards.
- Experience driving larger vehicles, shuttles, buses, or mobile service units preferred.
- Ability to complete inspection logs, mileage/fueling records, and incident documentation accurately and on time.
- Strong situational awareness, sound judgment, and ability to remain calm when navigating traffic, neighborhoods, and public-facing service settings.
- Ability to communicate effectively with staff, volunteers, community partners, and the public.
- Ability to lift, move, or assist with service materials and to enter/exit the vehicle repeatedly during route operations.
