Te kōwhiringa | The Opportunity

This role is a key part of the Milford Road Alliance. The Alliance is a combination of both NZ Transport Agency and Downer NZ staff based in Te Anau whose sole focus is the Milford Road SH94. The Homer Tunnel requires daily CCTV monitoring and checking of equipment. This is to ensure risks are minimised for traffic within the surveillance area by ensuring traffic is controlled and issues are dealt with promptly. In addition, there will be days when CCTV Operator is required to assist with traffic movements and convoys at any one of the three bases - Te Anau Office, Te Anau Kiosk & the Alpine Operations Centre.

This is primarily a Wednesday to Saturday, but other days will be rostered as required to provide coverage year-round. Hours of work can be 7:00am to 8:30pm on peak days and includes travel from Te Anau. The main place of work is the Alpine Operations Centre a purpose-built building near the Homer Tunnel.

Along with a positive attitude and your commitment to safe worksite practises, you will have a proven ability to ensure proper care, maintenance and operation of appropriate plant and equipment.

You will also have:

  • Understand and follow safety procedures, hold a current First Aid qualification (or willing to train), and have a Full Class 1 driver’s licence.
  • Demonstrate strong time management, can work unsupervised, and maintain excellent attention to detail.
  • A team player who is eager to contribute to team goals, learn new skills, and deliver high-quality work.
  • Possess great communication and leadership skills, with the ability to think on your feet and solve problems effectively.
  • Show genuine interest or experience in relevant crew work, with a results-driven mindset and a strong work ethic.
