Job Description

The University of Maine at Presque Isle (UMPI) is seeking a CBE Instructional Designer to support faculty in creating high-quality, accessible, and inclusive learning experiences, with a focus on YourPace, UMPI’s online competency-based education program. This role partners with full- and part-time faculty to design authentic, evidence-informed courses, align outcomes and assessments, and develop engaging digital content. The Instructional Designer also supports continuous improvement initiatives, accessibility enhancements, faculty training, and community-building for remote instructors.

The ideal candidate thrives in a collaborative, mission-driven environment, communicates effectively across diverse faculty populations, manages multiple projects, and leverages instructional technology to enhance learning. This role plays a key part in enabling faculty success, strengthening course quality, and supporting the growth and impact of UMPI’s YourPace program.

This is a fully remote position requiring reliable internet and a distraction-free home workspace. Work hours are flexible, though occasional evenings or weekends may be needed to meet with faculty across multiple time zones. The successful candidate will be required to come to campus once per year, typically in the fall or spring, for up to a few days, with timing determined by the supervisor and departmental needs.

The intended start date for this 12 month position is July 1, 2026. The salary for this full time position is $60,000. The university will take into consideration the salary of current UMS employees for transfer/promotion depending on skills and experience. Additional benefits include medical, retirement, dental, vision, and tuition waiver programs for employees and dependents. Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree required, preferably in Instructional Design, Instructional Technology, Curriculum & Instruction, Learning Experience Design/Sciences, or a closely related field.
  • Minimum of three years of professional experience in instructional design or a closely related field.
  • Experience working with faculty in higher education is strongly preferred.
  • Experience designing or supporting online learning; experience with competency-based education is strongly preferred.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in Learning Design & Technology, Learning Sciences, Curriculum and Assessment, Learning Analytics, or related field.
  • Experience with multimedia production, video editing, and/or web development.
  • Knowledge of learning analytics.
  • Experience designing competency-based education courses or working in self-paced online learning environments.
  • Familiarity with Quality Matters, OSCQR, or other quality assurance frameworks.
  • Experience facilitating communities of practice or professional development programs for faculty.
