About Us

Catholic Archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn Education Limited (CACGEL) operates in the ACT and NSW, supporting 56 Schools and nine Early Learning Centres (ELCs).

The Archdiocesan Schools Office provides a range of services to the system through four directorates including Faith in Learning, School Operations, Corporate Services and Governance and Strategy.

About the Role

The Catholic Curriculum and Teaching Lead position supports the overall mission of Catholic Archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn Education Limited (CACGEL), which is to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ through the integral human development of students. The role is critical to the successful execution of the 2027-2033 CACGEL Apostolic Action Plan, Grounded in Faith, Growing in Service (to be formally launched on 20 August). At the heart of this plan is faith formation of staff, necessary to ensure that “faith is the breath that oxygenates all other subjects” in the curriculum (Pope Leo XIV, “Drawing New Maps of Hope”).

The role is directly responsible to the Deputy Executive Director, Faith in Learning. The Faith in Learning directorate has recently been created by bringing together the current Catholic Identity Team and the Teaching and Learning Team, which previously operated independently in organisational siloes. This restructure is designed to support the design and implementation of a specifically Catholic approach to teaching and learning, ie a “Catholic Curriculum”.

The Catholic Curriculum and Teaching Lead position is tasked to lead the development and implementation of the multi-year Catholic Curriculum project, INSIGHT, and to ensure schools are supported to embed the evidence-based high-impact teaching practices introduced through the CATALYST program.

Taking our new “bold goal” as the starting point, that “faith oxygenates all other subjects” of the curriculum, the position will be required to work with school and curriculum leaders to develop their understanding of what this means in practice so they can lead implementation at the local level. The initial step will involve developing a curriculum framework that situates the curriculum within the Catholic Intellectual Tradition, with the understanding that sees all knowledge and human attempts at knowing as being, ultimately, connected to and leading to an understanding of God. This aspect of the role will be supported by two immediate past principals who will take on the roles of INSIGHT ENGAGEMENT PRINCIPALS, who will bring a particular focus to working with principals and curriculum leaders to build momentum “from the ground up”.

The Catholic Curriculum and Teaching Lead will also be required to work across service areas and collaborate with the four regional Assistant Directors in helping schools achieve the best possible educational outcomes for students and in ensuring that schools are being supported in their PL needs and in the implementation of the Catholic Curriculum. The role is also required to work closely with the School and Family Services team, to assist schools who have students who may have trouble accessing the curriculum.

Taking our other new “bold goal” as a starting point – that “All schools will achieve above expected growth in literacy and numeracy”, the Catholic Curriculum and Teaching Lead will evaluate and build on the curricula and pedagogical reforms of the CATALYST program, as well as insights from the research into how the mind acquires knowledge, to lead and promote best practice in learning and teaching. The role will ensure the design and implementation of assessment procedures that elicit actionable evidence of learning across all subject areas. The Catholic Curriculum and Teaching Lead will lead and implement system-wide professional learning in all subject areas, with a particular focus on Religious Education (in close collaboration with the Faith and Mission Lead) and Mathematics.

A knowledge of the Catholic Social Tradition and the Catholic Intellectual Tradition is essential as is a demonstrated understanding, capacity and willingness to learn from the work of scholars in the field of the Catholic understanding of the purposes of education. The capacity to form partnerships with outside agencies, including tertiary institutions local and overseas, is essential.
