The City of Victoria is hiring a Catch Basin Cleaner Operator to support our Underground Utilities Team at Public Works. In this hands-on role, you’ll operate a vacuum-equipped tandem axle truck to clean and maintain catch basins, underground vaults, and related infrastructure that protect the city from flooding and system failures. You’ll work with a partner along assigned routes, set up traffic control, complete safety checks and equipment inspections, and coordinate the work of an assistant, all while working safely around traffic and in varied weather conditions.
If you hold a valid Class 3 BC Driver’s Licence with air brake endorsement, Wastewater Collection System Operator Level 1 certification, and have related experience with underground systems and equipment operation, we encourage you to apply.
POSITION FUNCTION
Operate a vacuum equipped vehicle to clean and maintain catch basins, laterals and underground facilities.
KEY DUTIES
Operate a truck equipped with a vacuum system and water tank to clean and maintain catch basins, sumps, access ports, pumping stations, underground vaults and excavations; operate a hydostatic digger to excavate utilities; fill tanks from hydrant and complete record of hydrant use; set up traffic control signs and cones as required; test access port with gas detector and log results; report catch basin problems and other damage to supervisor.
Perform pre- and post-trip inspections by checking items such as fluid levels, belts, hoses and lights; check and adjust air brake system; empty and clean holding tank and interior and exterior of vehicle; report repairs needed and damage to supervisor and mechanic shop; check first aid and safety equipment; fill out daily equipment log, work records and time sheet.
Coordinate and review the work of approximately 1 assistant; ensure schedules, procedures and established performance and safety standards are met; provide employee training.
Establish maintenance routes; respond to work requests from other crews or sections to clean valve boxes, underground vaults and assist video inspection unit; clean material out of excavations as requested.
Perform related duties where qualified.
INDEPENDENCE
Work is performed according to annual maintenance schedule or assigned by supervisor and reviewed through daily activity reports.
Problems such as equipment repairs, safety issues, or damaged mains are referred to supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS
Formal Education, Training and Occupational Certification:
High school graduation.
Wastewater Collection System Operator Level 1 Certificate (40 hours)
Current and valid Class 3 B.C. Driver's Licence with air brake endorsement.
Experience:
2 years of related experience including underground systems and equipment operation.
or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
OTHER:
May be requested to substitute in a more senior position.
