StFX University is seeking dependable, hard-working applicants for Casual Grounds Crew positions within Facilities Management – Grounds & Transport. Successful candidates will support year-round grounds and landscape maintenance activities, contributing to the overall appearance, safety, and functionality of campus outdoor spaces.
This role offers hands-on, physically active work in a team-oriented environment, with responsibilities that vary seasonally based on operational and weather-related needs.
Salary is in accordance with the UNIFOR collective agreement. IA1 rate is $19.39/hour.
Hours are variable and operationally driven, scheduled on an “as needed” basis (days, evenings, nights, and weekends).
Key Responsibilities
- Perform a variety of grounds maintenance duties to support a clean, safe, and well-maintained campus.
- This position is physically demanding, requiring regular bending, kneeling, standing, lifting, pushing, pulling, and squatting.
- Work is performed outdoors in varying weather conditions throughout the year.
- Garbage and litter pick-up across campus grounds.
- Mowing, trimming, and edging lawns and landscaped areas.
- Operating grounds equipment including push mowers, riding mowers, zero-turn mowers, trimmers, and leaf blowers.
- Leaf blowing and seasonal clean-up of walkways, lawns, and landscaped areas.
- Assisting with planting, digging, mulching, and general horticultural maintenance.
- Transporting tools, materials, soil, mulch, and other grounds supplies.
- Performing basic cleaning and care of grounds equipment and reporting mechanical or safety concerns.
- Maintaining safe and accessible walkways, entrances, and outdoor areas.
- Reporting unsafe conditions or equipment issues to a supervisor.
- Other related duties as assigned.
During the winter season, responsibilities also include:
- Snow removal by shovel and/or snow blower.
- Ice control, including salting, chipping, and other manual methods.
- Clearing walkways, building entrances, stairways, and emergency exits.
- Assisting with refilling salt bins and moving winter maintenance materials.
- Employees are required to wear appropriate personal protective equipment, including CSA-approved safety footwear (loaners available if required), and dress appropriately for outdoor working conditions.
Qualifications
- Previous experience in grounds maintenance, landscaping, or horticulture is an asset.
- Experience operating grounds equipment (e.g., zero-turn mowers, tractors, trimmers) is considered a strong asset.
- Strong work ethic and willingness to perform physically demanding work.
- Reliable, punctual, and able to respond to operational needs, including short-notice work.
- Ability to follow instructions and work independently or as part of a team
- Good communication and organizational skills.
