About the role | Mō te tūranga:

Our Patient Services Department is at the heart of delivering exceptional healthcare to our community. We are seeking a Trainee or Phlebotomist to join our team. As a valued member of the department, you will play a hands-on role in collecting blood samples and managing a variety of clinical specimens, including blood, urine, faeces, and tissue, from patients in both community and hospital settings.

These specimens are then carefully processed and analysed in our cutting edge medical laboratory, directly contributing to accurate diagnoses and helping clinicians make informed decisions that impact patient care.

This is a casual position with flexible hours, including participation in weekend rosters as required, offering you a dynamic and rewarding work environment.

Key responsibilities:

  • Performing blood collection with accuracy and professionalism.
  • Safely handling and preparing clinical specimens for transport.
  • Operating Point of Care testing devices to deliver timely results for urgent clinical needs.
  • Providing excellent customer service and acting as a vital link between patients, healthcare professionals, and the laboratory.

The ideal candidate will hold a QMLT in Phlebotomy or a related qualification. However, for the right person, Awanui Labs Invercargill is proud to offer a comprehensive on-the-job training programme in Phlebotomy. We will support you through your training and help you work towards becoming a Qualified Phlebotomy Practitioner with the Medical Sciences Council of New Zealand.

To be successful in this role you need to have:

  • Demonstrate previous experience in a customer-facing role and a positive, friendly approach.
  • Demonstrate cultural and social sensitivity and be sensitive to special needs.
  • Be able to accurately follow detailed instructions and procedures in a fast-paced environment.
  • Be highly motivated towards learning and development in order to develop technical competency in Phlebotomy and other specimen collection procedures.
  • Have adaptable IT skills.
  • A reliable transport and full Driver's license.
  • Eligibility to work in New Zealand.

If you are not already registered with the Medical Science Council of New Zealand, we will support you working towards becoming a Qualified Medical Laboratory Pre-Analytical Technician within 2 years of employment.
