Job Description
The Medical Assistant, Casual Hourly, provides direct patient care and operational support to Physicians, Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners, and Registered Nurses within University Health Services clinical areas. Responsibilities include assisting with patient care activities, maintaining a clean and safe care environment, performing clerical and unit support tasks, supporting meal service, and ensuring adequate inventory and supply maintenance. The MA performs additional duties as assigned in accordance with established policies and scope of practice.
Responsibilities
Clinical Care 50%
Provides direct patient support and assists Physicians, Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners, and Registered Nurses (clinicians) in delivering safe, high-quality care, as directed.
- Enter students into the Infirmary schedule.
- Obtains and documents vital signs, including temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, and breath alcohol analysis; promptly reports abnormal findings to the clinician.
- Assists patients with ambulation and activities of daily living (ADLs) as needed.
- Provides 1:1 patient monitoring/observation as directed by the clinician.
- Observes patient condition and reports pertinent changes and relevant information to the clinician in a timely manner.
- Performs point-of-care diagnostic testing as directed, consistent with scope of practice and departmental protocols.
- Conducts shift-to-shift handoff communication with oncoming/outgoing Nurse Aides/Nursing Assistants/Medical Assistants to support continuity of care.
- Assists the Registered Nurse in providing emergency after-hours care to students.
- Performs other clinical duties as delegated by the Registered Nurse on duty
- Performs hand-off care with oncoming and outgoing Nurse Aides/Nursing Assistants/Medical Assistants
- Assists Registered Nurse to provide emergency after-hours care to students.
- Other clinical tasks as delegated by the Registered Nurse on duty.
Operations 30%
Assists in maintaining a clean, safe, and organized environment within the Infirmary unit and other designated areas, in accordance with established infection prevention and safety standards.
- Maintains patient rooms in a clean, neat, and orderly condition.
- Changes bed linens and assist with room turnover as needed.
- Cleans patient rooms following discharge to prepare for the next admission.
- Monitors and maintains cleanliness and tidiness of patient bathrooms.
- Properly dispose of soiled linens into laundry bags and stores used linens in designated linen hampers/areas.
- Cleans and disinfects surfaces in utility rooms and at the nurses’ station.
- Cleans and disinfects exam rooms after use per protocol.
- Maintains cleanliness and organization of the patient kitchen area.
- Cleans, stores, and returns equipment to appropriate locations following use.
- Responsible for daily stocking, organization, and monitoring of unit supplies, including but not limited to:

- Infirmary kitchen supplies/items
- Linen and bedding supplies
- Treatment room supplies
Administrative 20%
Provides administrative and clerical support to ensure efficient Infirmary operations and accurate patient documentation.
- Documents patient care data in the electronic health record (EHR/EMR), including temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, and breath alcohol analysis.
- Assists with patient admissions and orientation to the unit; prepares and organizes required hard-copy charts as applicable.
- Orders, distributes, and tracks meals and snacks for patients in accordance with unit processes.
- Answers and routes telephone calls professionally and appropriately.
- Greets and directs visitors in accordance with unit guidelines and privacy/HIPAA expectations.
- Scans documents into the EHR/EMR and make photocopies of patient-related documents as needed.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or GED
- Certified Medical Assistant or Registered Medical Assistant
- Demonstrated ability to safely perform basic patient care tasks, such as:
- Vital signs (BP, HR, RR, temperature, O2 saturation)
- Intake and output documentation
- Patient hygiene and basic ADLs
- Patient transport/ambulation support
- Experience assisting with or performing advanced tech skills (as permitted by scope/policy), such as:
- Blood glucose testing (fingerstick)
- EKG placement
- Specimen collection/transport (urine/stool/swabs)
- Ability to recognize and promptly report changes in patient condition (e.g., shortness of breath, dizziness, fever, mental status changes).
- Effective communication skills, including ability to communicate clearly with RNs, providers, patients, and families.
- Ability to follow written protocols, safety standards, infection prevention practices, and HIPAA/privacy requirements.
- Proficiency with documentation (electronic or paper) and ability to learn institutional systems.
- Current BLS/CPR certification required (or must obtain within 60 days of hire).
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-acuity clinical environment with competing priorities
- Ability to move freely throughout the unit and stand for extended periods of time.

- Be knowledgeable in principles and methodologies (e.g., Plan-Do-Study-Act, Root Cause Analysis, measurement, data collection, and analysis) needed to support and lead Quality Improvement projects and activities and/or willing to attend UHS-based Quality Improvement basic training within first 6-months of hire.
