Summary

****Applicants seeking short-term or part-time work with the University Hawai'i may apply for Casual Hire positions, which include administrative, professional, and technical (APT) or instructional-type positions. Because of the temporary nature of these appointments, Casual Hire employees are not eligible for most benefits as provided to regular BOR and Civil Service employees such as paid leave and holidays. Casual Hire appointments may last for up to 89 days for full-time employees, and up to 1 calendar year for part-time employees.

Other Conditions:

To begin as soon as 10/8/2026, for up to one year, but may end sooner, dependent on availability of funding and program need. Must be available to work during office business hours M-F, 7:45am to 4:30pm as well as outside the normal working hours as directed.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Research and synthesize information related to Honouliuli National Historic Site.
  2. Conduct pre-interviews and oral history interviews.
  3. Index, abstract, transcribe, edit, and coordinate narrator review and approval of interview materials.
  4. Support Center for Oral History programs by editing audio/video files, selecting interview excerpts, participating in meetings and public programs, and completing other related duties as needed.
  5. Work outside the normal working hours, including evening, weekends, and holidays, as directed.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in History.
  2. Two years of experience in oral history research, transcription, and interviewing.
  3. Demonstrated ability to work in a team.
  4. Working knowledge of transcription practices, oral history ethics, and the English language.
  5. Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  6. Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
  7. Demonstrated proficiency in computer literacy (Microsoft Office Suite, Google Suite, Zoom).
  8. Ability to work outside of the normal working hours, including evening, weekends, and holidays, as needed.

Desirable Qualifications

  1. Working knowledge of 'Olelo Hawai'i (written and spoken).
  2. Working knowledge of Hawai'i Creole English
  3. Experience conducting and/or transcribing oral history interviews.
  4. Experience editing video and/or audio files.
  5. Experience copyediting.
  6. Ability to work independently with minimum supervision.
