The Opportunity

The University of the Sunshine Coast (UniSC) is seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Casual Academic to deliver tutorial and laboratory support for TPP109 Biology within the Tertiary Preparation Program (TPP). This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to enabling education and make a meaningful difference in the academic journeys of students transitioning into higher education.

You will

  • Facilitate weekly tutorials and/or practical laboratory sessions for enabling students enrolled in TPP109 Biology across face-to-face and blended delivery modes
  • Support students in developing foundational biological knowledge across content areas including cell biology, microbiology, human physiology, and ecology
  • Provide timely, constructive, and consistent feedback on student assessment tasks in accordance with the course marking rubric and moderation standards
  • Assist in the marking and moderation of written assessment tasks including short response questions, scientific summaries, and laboratory reports
  • Support students in developing scientific literacy skills including reading and interpreting peer-reviewed journal articles and communicating biological information using appropriate scientific language and conventions
  • Maintain accurate student attendance and engagement records in accordance with UniSC policy
  • Participate in marker calibration and moderation meetings with the Course Coordinator prior to and during assessment marking periods
  • Refer students experiencing academic or personal difficulties to appropriate UniSC support services including the Learning Advisors and Student Wellbeing teams
  • Contribute positively to the teaching team and course development as directed by the Course Coordinator

About you

You are an enthusiastic and student-focused educator with a passion for supporting learners as they transition into higher education. With a qualification in Biological Sciences, Biomedical Science, or a related discipline, you bring strong foundational biology knowledge and the ability to communicate scientific concepts clearly and engagingly. You are committed to creating inclusive learning environments and supporting students to build confidence, develop academic skills, and succeed in their educational journey.

You will possess:

  • A bachelor's degree or higher in Biological Sciences, Biomedical Science, or a closely related discipline (essential)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of foundational biology content areas including cell biology, microbiology, human physiology, and ecology (essential)
  • Experience in teaching, tutoring, demonstrating, or academic support at secondary or tertiary level (desirable)
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate complex scientific concepts clearly and accessibly to diverse student cohorts (essential)
  • Understanding of or commitment to enabling and widening participation education principles (desirable)
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills including familiarity with scientific language and conventions (essential)
  • Ability to provide constructive written feedback on student assessment tasks against a marking rubric (essential)
  • Demonstrated commitment to inclusive teaching practices and student-centred learning (desirable)
  • Current Working with Children Check (Blue Card) or willingness to obtain prior to commencement (essential)

Desirable:

  • Honours, Masters, or PhD qualification in a biological sciences discipline
  • Previous experience teaching or tutoring in an enabling, bridging, or foundation studies program
  • Familiarity with Canvas LMS or equivalent learning management system
  • Experience working with students from diverse academic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds
