POSITION INFO

POSITION TITLE: Down-casting Operator –1 Shift – 8:30 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. Monday-Thursday

LOCATION: Stuarts Draft, Virginia

PERFORMANCE SUMMARY:

The purpose of this position is to safely produce cast copper logs of acceptable quality for use in the extrusion of seamless copper tubing and solid copper rod. This will be accomplished chiefly through setting up and operating any and all casting machinery, staging raw materials and scrap copper for melting, and tending the melting furnaces associated with the cost center listed above. Cleaning the work area and equipment and any other assigned duties as deemed necessary by the area supervision will also be expected. This work area experiences exposure to molten metal and high heat levels, often in excess of 100 degrees Fahrenheit during the summer months. Wearing full PPE including heat-resistant jacket, helmet with face shield, hot mill gloves, steel-toed shoes, safety glasses and hearing protection will still be required.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Operation of casting machinery – Entails safely setting-up, starting, supporting, troubleshooting, maintaining, and cleaning of any and all assignable machinery. Tasks may include use of powered lift equipment, frequent use of ladders/stairs and working on fixed elevated platforms.
• Inspection of manufactured copper logs/billets to quality specifications – Associate will be expected to use many different forms of measuring tools, including gages, calipers and micrometers to ensure manufactured logs/billets comply with internal and external quality standards. Collecting molten copper samples for chemical analysis will also be expected.
• Clean up of work area – Associate will be expected to maintain a clean and safe work area around the machinery to which they are assigned each day. This cleaning may include, sweeping, mopping, removal of manufacturing by-products, and cleaning of surrounding work areas.
• Flow to available work – Associates will be expected to work in other manufacturing areas as dictated by the flow of new orders. Assignment to other work areas can last for indeterminate periods of time.
• Adheres to all safety guidelines.
• Supports safety committee: participates in safety initiatives

EXPERIENCE

Experience successfully operating and maintaining the machinery associated with this particular work area will be most heavily considered when selecting from applicants for this position (experience operating and maintaining any heavy manufacturing equipment, manual and/or automated, will be considered favorable). Familiarity with the quality checks associated with production of cast copper logs/billets will also be a plus. If all above considerations are deemed to be equal, time of service will be used as the deciding factor in awarding the position.

EDUCATION

A high school diploma or GED is Preferred.
