Carton/Packaging Engineer
4WD Supacentre - 6 Month Contract (Potential to extend) | Brisbane
About the Role
4WD Supacentre is seeking an experienced and detail-driven Carton Engineer / Packaging Designer to lead the optimisation, redesign, and ongoing improvement of all product packaging across the Adventure Kings, Adventure Kings Plus.
This role bridges Product Development, Marketing, Supply Chain, Compliance, and Visual Merchandising, ensuring every carton meets functional, branding, compliance, operational, and retail-ready requirements. You will play a critical role in transforming our packaging into a major brand asset while improving efficiency, reducing waste, and enhancing the in-store customer experience.
Key Responsibilities
Packaging Engineering & Design
- Design, develop, and optimise retail and shipping cartons for all product categories across the business.
- Create dielines, packaging specifications, print files, and structural designs.
- Improve carton durability, product protection, and logistic efficiency (palletisation, stacking strength, freight optimisation).
- Champion shelf-ready and tear-away carton designs to support new retail merchandising strategies.
- Maintain packaging consistency across brands while supporting individual brand guidelines (AK, AK+)
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work closely with Marketing on packaging artwork, branding, messaging and front-of-box key selling points.
- Partner with Product Development to ensure cartons are suitable for new product launches, prototype fitments, and cost targets.
- Collaborate with Supply Chain to optimise carton dimensions for container utilisation, warehouse efficiency, and freight cost reduction.
- Support Visual Merchandising to ensure packaging is practical for store layouts, displays, shelf-heights, and planograms.
- Liaise with Compliance to ensure all packaging meets Australian packaging standards, legal marking requirements, and emerging sustainability guidelines (including APCO compliance).
Store & Network Integration
- Work closely with the Visual Merchandising team, who will act as the primary point of contact for the national retail store network.
- Support VM by providing updated dielines, carton changes, artwork, and technical specifications required for store rollouts.
- Collaborate with VM to ensure packaging changes are implemented correctly across stores and gather any feedback needed to further improve carton design and usability.
Compliance, Testing & Sustainability
- Ensure all cartons comply with new and upcoming packaging legislation and environmental/labeling requirements.
- Work with external printers, manufacturers, and testing labs to validate carton strength, materials, and environmental impact.
- Support the business in reducing packaging waste, improving recyclability, and minimising non-compliant materials.
Skills & Experience
- Degree or qualification in Packaging Engineering, Industrial Design, Graphic Design, or similar.
- 3+ years’ experience in packaging engineering or carton design (FMCG, retail, or consumer goods preferred).
- Strong working knowledge of structural carton design, corrugated grades, testing standards, and manufacturing processes.
- Proficiency in design software (Adobe Illustrator, ArtiosCAD, SolidWorks, or similar).
- Understanding of Australian packaging regulations, barcoding standards, and sustainability requirements (APCO highly desirable).
- Strong communication skills with the ability to manage multiple stakeholders and projects.
- Ability to translate technical requirements into cost-effective and visually impactful solutions.
- Understanding of logistics, warehousing, and retail merchandising considerations.
