Mountmakers are anticipated to work a schedule of 10-15 hours per week as available. All work time must take place during regular NHMU working hours, which may include weekends.
A museum mountmaker designs, fabricates, and installs custom, conservation-grade display supports for fragile artifacts, specimens, and objects. Working collaboratively with collection managers, curators, and exhibit staff, the mountmaker creates secure and unobtrusive mounts that protect collection objects from damage while enhancing their presentation. This position requires expertise in metalworking – from brass to steel depending on the need, plastics fabrication, and the use of other archival materials.
To be considered for this position applicants must possess professional museum mountmaking experience and demonstrate expert art-handling skills, exceptional fine motor skills, and a thorough understanding of conservation-grade materials and fabrication techniques.
