Tewksbury Hospital is looking for a Carpenter I to perform all necessary activities to properly design, inspect, repair, install, maintain, alter and remove carpentry related structures, building components and furnishings. The Carpenter I works with other hospital employees and contractors to ensure the operation, safety and regulatory compliance of all structures, building components and furnishings located on the property of Tewksbury Hospital.

Please Note This position is 40 hours per week, working first shift. Days off are Saturday and Sunday.

Detailed Statement of Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintains buildings and related structures applying carpentry techniques and using carpentry tools to construct, alter, repair and/or install wall, stairs, floors, ceilings, windows, doors, closers, roofs, gutters, locks, mail slots and ventilation grills, access panels, handicapped chair rails and ramps, shelving, etc.
  • Performs structural repair, alteration or improvement work such as lowering ceilings and paneling areas; preparing surfaces for plaster or cement work; studding, wiring and plastering walls and cracks and holes, taping joints on sheetrock and pre-cementing and/or replacing Formica tops.
  • Performs all duties necessary for the planning, design, installation, modification, repair and removal of carpentry related structures, building components and furnishings.
  • Determines the need for, prices, orders, stores, inventories, distributes and documents the use of stock and special order parts and materials.
  • Operates, maintains, secures departmental and hospital carpentry supplies and equipment.
  • Works with employees, contractors, consultants, vendors and others designated by the administration of the hospital and/or are necessary to successfully perform the duties described within this document.
  • Ensure hospital compliance with all related codes, regulations and standards.
  • Develops and maintains a knowledge of and complies with appropriate hospital policies, procedures, practices and directives.
  • Attends all assigned meetings, training and other gatherings / events.
  • Performs all other duties related to the success completion of requests, orders, job duties and directives approved by the hospitals administration or their designee.
  • Ensures shop and work areas are organized and clean.

  • Knowledge of and ability to interpret all codes, regulations and standards related to the planning, design, installation, modification, repair and removal of carpentry related structures, building components and furnishings.
  • Ability to perform all physical activities related to the duties outline on this document.
  • Ability to read blue prints, drawings and sketches.
  • Ability to follow and issue written and verbal instructions.

Tewksbury Hospital under the Department of Public Health (DPH),is a 370 bed Joint Commission accredited hospital. The hospital provides broad treatment of care and comfort to adults with medical and/or mental illnesses. Tewksbury Hospital offers a broad range of services including a physician on site at all times, around-the-clock nursing care, rehabilitation services including physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy, psychology services, social services, nutritional services, and an on-site dialysis clinic.

Qualifications

Minimum Entrance Requirements:

Applicants must have at least (A) two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in carpentry, woodworking or cabinet-making work, or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.

Substitutions:

I. A diploma or certificate from a recognized trade, technical or vocational school, at high school level or higher, with a major in carpentry, woodworking or cabinetmaking may be substituted for the required experience.

Special Requirements: None.

Salary placement is determined by a combination of factors, including the candidate’s years of directly related experience and education, and alignment with our internal compensation structure as set forth by the Human Resources Division’s Hiring Guidelines. For all bargaining unit positions (non-management), compensation is subject to the salary provisions outlined in the applicable collective bargaining agreement and will apply to placement within the appropriate salary range.
