Job Description

The Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR), Parks and Natural Resources Division (PNR), is seeking a skilled Carpenter to join its Facilities and Construction team. This is an opportunity to put your craftsmanship to work while helping maintain and enhance Arlington County’s parks and recreational spaces.

Working both independently and as part of a team, you’ll design, build, repair, and improve a wide range of structures and features—from small buildings, bridges, fences, and roofs to benches, tables, doors, cabinets, and windows. You’ll also share your expertise by providing technical guidance to facility managers, carpenters, and other trades staff.

If you enjoy hands-on work, solving unique carpentry challenges, working outdoors, and seeing the results of your work benefit the community, this position offers a chance to build, create, and make a lasting impact across Arlington’s parks and facilities.

Specific duties include:

  • Performing senior-level skilled carpentry work and coordinating construction, renovation, and repair projects for recreational and park facilities throughout the County;
  • Participating in the identification, planning, design, scheduling, and implementation of projects;
  • Providing technical construction direction and coordination to other carpenters or to fluctuating crews of trades workers for projects;
  • Using hand-held and power tools and equipment to make repairs, construct, assemble and/or modify a variety of objects and structures;
  • Identifying structural problems;
  • Designing small construction projects;
  • Interpreting work orders, blueprints, construction drawings, manuals, and/or assembly directions;
  • Determining appropriate construction methods, tools, and materials; maintains equipment and supplies;
  • Providing on-site quality control and safety oversight; and
  • Performing related administrative functions.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Completion of the requirements for graduation from a standard senior high school or vocational school, a GED certificate, or the equivalent; and
  • Three years' experience in carpentry.

Substitution: Additional years of carpentry experience may be substituted for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis.

Desirable: Preference will be given to applicants with one or more of the following:

  • Experience with shop tools such as jointers, shapers, bandsaws, table saws, planers, etc.;
  • Experience leading or coordinating the work of others; and/or
  • Training/experience in electrical, plumbing, painting, and/or masonry work.

Special Requirements

The applicant must possess, or obtain by the time of appointment, a valid motor vehicle operator's license from the applicant's place of residence. If the applicant possesses or acquires a license, the applicant must authorize Arlington County to obtain, or the applicant must provide a copy of the applicant's official state/district driving record. Any offer of employment may be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant's driving record.

The work environment includes exposure to drafts, noise, sawdust, grease, and dirt with extended periods of standing, walking, bending, crouching, climbing, and lifting light to very heavy objects and equipment.

Your responses to the Supplemental Questionnaire are considered part of the selection process. Please do not enter "see resume" as a response to the questions.

Each section of the application must be completed. A resume may be attached; however, it will not substitute for the completed application. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
