Summary

Perform a variety of journey level, skilled carpentry, cabinetry and general construction duties supporting the construction, maintenance, repair and remodeling of City buildings and facilities and perform a variety of technical tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility.

Examples of duties

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Essentialfunctions may include, but are not limited to the functions listed below. Mustbe able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without areasonable accommodation.

  1. Construct, repair or remodel wooden, block, concrete, brick or metal buildings and attachments.
  2. Perform rough and finished carpentry work from beginning to end including framing of new construction and the maintenance and repair of existing buildings and facilities.
  3. Build cabinets, desks, shelving, display cases, conference tables and picture frames in carpentry shop using wood working machines such as power saws, shaper and jointer.
  4. Remodel offices in City buildings and facilities; build and install customized shelves, cabinets, counters and other customized projects in City buildings.
  5. Install hardware on wood and steel doors and wood cabinets; repair and re-key locks and lock systems.
  6. Install and replace glass and plexiglass in wood, steel and aluminum windows; construct complete window frames; repair or replace window frames and broken windows and glazing.
  7. Install and repair suspended ceilings; hang and tape drywall and install other types and forms of paneling.
  8. May Install shade structures and playground equipment on city park facilities.
  9. Install and repair roofs including tabs, roll roofing and Spanish tile.
  10. Construct cement forms; pour, finish, and repair concrete pads, footings, walks, planters and related items.
  11. Read, follow and prepare blueprints, shop drawings, and sketches supporting the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities.
  12. Estimate and purchase materials with approval and in compliance with City purchasing procedures.
  13. Perform general cleanup at job sites.

SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Participate in the construction, painting and repair of park facilities as required.
  2. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

Qualifications

Education and experience directly related to the minimum requirements below may be interchangeable on a year for year basis.

High school diploma or GED supplemented by a two (2) year technical or formal apprenticeship program in finish carpentry or cabinet making; and

Two (2) years of general carpentry experience.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Possession of a valid New Mexico Driver's License, or ability to obtain by date of hire.

Possession of a City Operator's Permit (COP) within six (6) months from date of hire.

Supplemental information

Environmental:

Community center and field environment; travel from site to site; exposure to noise.

Physical:

Essential and supplemental functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for walking, standing or sitting for prolonged periods of time; operating equipment.
