How You’ll Help Transform Healthcare:

This position will support Carilion Family Medicine.

The Senior Director provides strategic, operational, financial, and administrative leadership for multiple departments, programs, or service lines. Responsible for developing and implementing operational plans, managing budgets, leading performance improvement initiatives, ensuring regulatory compliance, and advancing organizational goals. Collaborates with internal and external stakeholders to optimize patient care delivery, enhance operational performance, and support organizational growth and innovation.

The Senior Director, Carilion Clinic

  • ​Provides strategic leadership and oversight for multiple departments, programs, or service lines.

  • Oversees the delivery of patient care through subordinate directors, managers, and clinical leaders, ensuring quality, safety, operational effectiveness, and efficient utilization of resources.

  • Establishes operational goals, objectives, budgets, and performance metrics aligned with organizational priorities.

  • Develops and implements strategic plans to support growth, service expansion, operational excellence, and patient-centered care.

  • Oversees fiscal management activities including budget development, implementation, monitoring, and resource allocation.

  • Leads performance improvement initiatives utilizing data-driven decision making and project management methodologies.

  • Ensures compliance with applicable federal, state, regulatory, licensure, accreditation, and organizational requirements.

  • Collaborates with physicians, clinical leaders, and internal and external stakeholders to improve quality, patient safety, operational efficiency, and patient experience.

  • Monitors patient care outcomes, quality metrics, patient safety indicators, and service standards, implementing improvement strategies as needed.

  • Ensures appropriate staffing models, workforce planning, and resource allocation to meet patient care needs and organizational objectives.

  • Directs the development, implementation, and evaluation of policies, procedures, and operational standards.

  • Oversees staffing, recruitment, retention, succession planning, and professional development activities in partnership with Human Resources.

  • Coaches, mentors, and develops leaders and staff to promote engagement, accountability, and high performance.

  • Leads organizational initiatives involving process improvement, technology optimization, digital transformation, and service delivery enhancements.

  • Ensures effective communication, collaboration, and coordination across departments and service lines.

  • Represents the organization within the healthcare community, professional organizations, and external partnerships.

  • Identifies opportunities for growth, innovation, and market expansion to support organizational objectives.

  • Facilitates the implementation of new programs, services, technologies, and strategic initiatives.

  • Promotes a culture of quality, safety, service excellence, continuous improvement, and accountability.

What We Require:

Education: Master's degree or 6 years of relevant experience can be accepted in lieu of degree.


If the area(s) of responsibility include supervising RNs, a master's degree is required and a bachelors nursing degree (BSN) is required for Magnet compliance pending the area is within the Magnet scope.

Experience: Minimum of 6 years of experience in management, preferably health care environment, demonstrating increased and/or diversified responsibility for related services. Advanced leadership, planning and organizational skills managing multiple and potentially large, complex departments and has directed successful completion of initiatives and achievement of fiscal goals.

Licensure, certification, and/or registration: As required by area of assignment.


Minimum qualifications: Demonstrated leadership, strategic planning, financial management, project management, performance improvement, communication, and relationship-building skills. Ability to lead organizational change, manage competing priorities, and collaborate effectively with physicians, leaders, staff, and external stakeholders.

Compensation Range:

$143,728.00 - $229,964.80

Employee pay is based on a variety of factors, including qualifications, credentials, education, and prior work experience. The compensation range does not include benefits or pension plan.
