POSITION PURPOSE SUMMARY:
The incumbent performs custodial, cleaning, minor maintenance, groundskeeping, and building-support duties to ensure the facility and surrounding property are clean, safe, secure, and well maintained. The incumbent may perform all, some, or a similar range of duties and responds to operational needs as directed by the supervisor.

ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Custodial and Cleaning

  • Perform routine cleaning according to established schedules, rotations, duty lists, and work orders.
  • Empty garbage and recycling receptacles; place bins out for collection and return them afterward.
  • Vacuum carpets; sweep, mop, and wash floors; clean baseboards and accessible walls; strip and wax floors and shampoo carpets as required.
  • Clean windows, glass, ledges, doors, offices, furnishings, fixtures, tables, chairs, and other surfaces.
  • Clean and sanitize washrooms, including toilets, sinks, counters, mirrors, fixtures, and floors, and restock supplies and hand sanitizers.
  • Maintain kitchens and common areas in a clean and sanitary condition, where applicable.
  • Move, arrange, and clean furniture as required.
  • Ensure assigned areas are clean, safe, orderly, and odor-free.

Building and General Maintenance

  • Conduct routine interior and exterior inspections and report safety, security, cleaning, or maintenance concerns.
  • Perform minor repairs within established limits, including changing light bulbs, unblocking toilets, troubleshooting minor plumbing issues, wall patching/touch-up painting, and minor furniture or equipment repairs.
  • Determine when maintenance concerns require referral to the supervisor or an external service provider.
  • Check doors and windows as required to help maintain building security.
  • Monitor supplies and advise the supervisor when replenishment is required.
  • Maintain required duty logs, work orders, and mechanical/equipment-room records.
  • Participate in scheduled building and systems checks.
  • Support and coordinate scheduled visits from contractors, vendors, and service providers as directed.
  • Complete assigned pick-ups and deliveries and respond to unexpected operational needs.

Grounds and Seasonal Maintenance

  • Maintain the exterior property, grounds, storage areas, and outdoor structures.
  • Conduct regular exterior checks for safety and maintenance concerns.
  • Keep entrances, sidewalks, and walkways clear of snow and ice and apply salt or approved ice-control products as required.
  • Perform litter collection, lawn care, and general groundskeeping.
  • Complete seasonal property-maintenance duties as assigned.

Working Conditions

  • Work is performed indoors within the ministry unit and outdoors on the surrounding grounds.
  • Frequent use of cleaning equipment and tools is required, with appropriate care when handling chemicals and cleaners.
  • Physical effort includes standing, walking, mopping, sweeping, bending, twisting, climbing, carrying, pushing, pulling, ladder work, and spot painting.
  • Moderate to high attention and concentration are required when operating electrical or mechanical equipment.
  • Physical stamina and the ability to lift, carry, push, or pull objects weighing up to 50 lbs are usually required.
  • Outdoor duties may be performed in varying weather conditions.
  • The work environment is generally positive; however, the incumbent may occasionally interact with individuals displaying challenging behaviours.
  • Evening or weekend work may be required according to operational needs and schedules.

Education

  • Completion of Grade 12 is a minimum requirement for this role.

Experience and Knowledge

  • Five years of related experience is a minimum requirement for this role.
  • Familiarity with cleaning techniques, equipment, tools, and cleaning agents.
  • Knowledge of custodial and basic building-maintenance practices and workplace health and safety requirements, including WHMIS.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • An alternative level or combination of education and experience may be acceptable.

  • Willingness to develop an understanding of and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada as it relates to position responsibilities.
  • Ability to work independently and cooperatively as part of a team.
  • Ability to identify and address minor cleaning and maintenance issues and determine when matters should be referred to a supervisor.
  • Good oral and written communication skills and ability to follow detailed instructions.

  • Strong attention to detail, organization, time management, and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated patience, understanding, and professionalism in interactions with others.
  • High level of integrity, confidentiality, and professional ethics, with a balanced sense of fairness and flexibility.
  • Must comply with all applicable Salvation Army policies, procedures, health and safety requirements, and legislation.
  • Ability and willingness to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion.

Compensation:

The target hiring range for this position is $16.35 to $19.50 with a maximum of $22.64.

Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
