Position Purpose summary:

This role is responsible for performing janitorial and groundskeeping duties to ensure The Salvation Army’s facilities are maintained in a healthy, safe, and sanitary manner in accordance with the applicable standards and requirements. The role contributes to the broader mission and values of The Salvation Army, upholding standards of service that reflect its spiritual and social commitment to the community

Accountabilities:
Incumbents may perform all, some, or similar range of duties as below.

  • Carry out assigned duties and respond to unexpected operational needs as directed by the supervisor.
  • Monitor supply levels and notify the supervisor when replenishment is required.
  • Follow established cleaning schedules, rotations, and duty lists.
  • Clear and apply salt at entrances and walkways as needed to maintain safe access.
  • Perform cleaning and upkeep of the building’s interior, exterior, and surrounding grounds (such as sweeping and mopping all floors, cleaning and sanitizing washrooms, cleaning windows and glass doors, dusting furniture, rails, pulpit, heaters and top and bottom of coat racks and vacuuming pews and all carpet areas).
  • Ensures the general upkeep of the external property such as mowing lawns, keeping sidewalks clear of snow and ice, cleaning main floor outside windows, picking up visible litter, gardening/watering shrubs, raking etc.
  • Keep janitor room clean and tidy.
  • Complete daily duty logs and follow work order procedures.
  • Maintain required log sheets for mechanical and equipment rooms.
  • Communicate outstanding operational issues to the appropriate staff according to established protocols.
  • Perform janitorial responsibilities, including work on weekends or evenings as needed.
  • Ensure all assigned areas are clean, safe, and odor-free, and report concerns to the supervisor.
  • Conduct daily exterior checks to identify safety or maintenance issues.
  • Perform minor building and equipment repairs, including basic kitchen equipment tasks, within established limits.
  • Carry out regular and special waste collection and removal.
  • Conduct scheduled pick-ups and deliveries as assigned.
  • Support grounds maintenance activities and coordinate work with contracted service providers when required.
  • Assist with seasonal tasks to keep grounds, sidewalks, and outdoor structures clean and safe.
  • Participate in monthly building systems checks according to established procedures.
  • Coordinate scheduled visits from external vendors following established procedures.
  • Support emergency response in accordance with facility protocols.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Working Conditions:

  • Work is performed indoors within the ministry unit and on the grounds.
  • The performance of the job requires frequent use of cleaning equipment and tools.
  • Care is required in the use of chemicals and cleaners.
  • Physical effort needed in mopping, sweeping, bending/twisting, climbing, carrying, ladder work, spot painting.
  • Moderate to high levels of attention and concentration when using electrical or mechanical equipment.
  • Physical stamina and the ability to lift, carry or pull/push objects up to 50 lbs are usually required.
  • The work environment is generally positive; however, the incumbent may occasionally interact with individuals displaying challenging behaviours.

Education, Qualifications and Certifications:

  • Obtain a Criminal Police Check and Clearance through The Salvation Army Internal Abuse Registry and be willing to sign the Salvation Army Code of Conduct Receipt & Acknowledgement Form
  • Completion of Grade 12 is a minimum requirement for this role.

Experience and Knowledge Requirements:

  • Five years of related experience is a minimum requirement for this role.
  • Familiarity with various cleaning techniques, equipment, and cleaning agents.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • An alternative level or combination of education and experience may be acceptable.

Skills and Capabilities:

  • Willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Ability to identify and address minor cleaning and maintenance issues independently and determine when to refer matters to a supervisor.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions accurately.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Disciplined and adaptable, with a willingness to learn.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail with good problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated patience, understanding, and professionalism in all interactions.

  • Physical stamina and the ability to lift, carry or pull/push objects up to 50 lbs.

This is a temporary part-time position.

Compensation:

The target hiring range for this position is $16.35 to $19.50 with a maximum of $22.64.

Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
