Become an Unpaid Carers’ Champion in Wiltshire

Volunteer Role | Flexible Commitment | Make a Real Difference

Do you have experience as an unpaid carer? Are you passionate about connecting with and supporting others in your community?

Wiltshire Council is looking for a dedicated Unpaid Carers’ Champion to join our network in Wiltshire. This voluntary role is a unique opportunity to make a meaningful impact in the lives of unpaid carers—those who care for family members, friends, or neighbours without financial compensation.

Your Mission

As a Carers’ Champion, your main goal will be to:

  • Support unpaid carers (those 18+) in finding and accessing the information and services they need, all meetings will take place in community settings or other public places
  • Help carers feel connected, valued, and supported in their role
  • Enable people to live at home for longer by strengthening the support available to carers
  • Champion carers’ voices in your local area

What You’ll Do

This role is flexible and can be shaped by you. You might:

  • Share information about local support groups and benefits
  • Attend carer’s community events, such as coffee mornings or play group activities
  • Connect carers with community resources
  • Raise awareness of carers’ needs in your area
  • Offer a listening ear and signpost to professional help when needed
  • Work closely with the Wiltshire Council Engagement and Partnership Lead and the Wiltshire Council Unpaid Carers Commissioner
  • Develop a relationship with charities supporting Unpaid Carers in Wiltshire

Who We’re Looking For

You don’t need formal qualifications—just:

  • A genuine interest in supporting unpaid carers
  • Good communication and listening skills
  • A proactive and compassionate approach
  • Local knowledge or lived experience as a carer (past or present)
  • At least half a day (3.5 hours) availability within a working week – this can be spread across the week, if required
  • A valid DBS certificate (the council can facilitate & pay expenses for acquiring one, should you not hold a DBS certificate)
