A Brief Overview

Prescribes, delegates and coordinates professional nursing care to pediatric and adult congenital heart patients through the use of nursing process and in accordance with hospital policy/procedure. Demonstrates competency in identified skills for area. Expands knowledge of pediatric practice in clinic specific area and contributes to the professional development of peers, colleagues and others.

Essential Functions

  • Implements a comprehensive plan of care for the cardiology patient/family:

    *Teaches the patient/family about all aspects of congenital heart disease such as anatomy/physiology, medications, blood work, activities, and follow -up.

    *Communicates the medical plan and related nursing care implementations to PCP and other medical resources involved in patient's care.

    *Monitors outpatient lab work and reports findings to cardiologist as needed.

    *Authorizes prescription refills under provider supervision.

    *Provides outpatient cardiology clinic nursing coverage

    *Reviews patient chart to assure outpatient testing is correct and appropriate.

    *Staffs outreach clinics with cardiologists as assigned, traveling required.
  • Acts as liaison between pediatric cardiology, patients and their families and other health care team members:
    • Communicates the cardiologist plan of care to the patient/family.
    • Schedules diagnostic tests and procedures when necessary, including prior authorizations.
    • Coordinates necessary lab work, follow-up testing, and communicates any medical changes to the patient/family.
    • Refers patient needs/concerns to the cardiologist for medical follow-up.
    • Acts as patient advocate to address the patient’s needs and concerns.
    • Serves as the resource for answering patient/family questions or concerns regarding medical plan of care.
    • Works with referring physicians in coordinating and implementing patient care issues and scheduling of cardiology procedures.
  • Attends weekly cardiac catheterization conferences in person or via zoom, attends cardiac educational offerings when appropriate
  • Regular attendance at work is an essential function of the job.
  • Perform physical requirements as described in the Physical Requirements section
  • Develops talks, in-services, pamphlets and other educational information as requested.


Education Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in nursing Preferred

Experience Qualifications

  • Minimum 2 years experience in nursing with pediatric patients Preferred and
  • Experience in a cardiac environment Preferred

Skills and Abilities

  • Strong leadership and organizational skills.
  • Prefer knowledge of insurance authorization.
  • Other certifications/education as defined by area specific job competencies.

Licenses and Certifications

  • Health ServicesRN - Registered Nurse - State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure Current and valid Nebraska RN license/RN Compact license Required
  • Health ServicesBCLS - Basic Life Support through the American Heart Association Required
  • Occasional driving may be required for the position Required
