Job Description

Performs various (basic and advanced) cardiac ultrasound examinations under direction of staff Cardiologist. Utilizes Ultrasound equipment. Provides direct patient care to patients. Contributes to efficient operation of department, ensuring quality and continuity of patient care. Rotates between the Davis and Mayo buildings and may be required to rotate to outreach sites. Responsible for thorough imaging and documentation of various conditions and anatomical differences. Must possess extensive knowledge of human anatomy and physiology. Uses several different types of Ultrasound equipment and transducers. Utilizes all Ultrasound techniques, including gray scale imaging, color and spectral Doppler, 3D, and strain imaging. Provides interpreting physician with preliminary report through EIMS, then reviews all images prior to final reading of the exam. Must be well organized and able to function independently. Assist in the orientation and training of all levels of trainees and visitors assigned to the Echocardiography Laboratory. Expectations extended to include on-call practices, weekends, evenings and holiday coverage as needed. Must possess strong human relation and communication skills, and sound judgment. Must have understanding of sterile procedures and isolation precaution techniques, and must exercise proper precautions to avoid potential exposure to radiation, infectious hazards, sharp instruments and defibrillator equipment.

Education Requirement: RDCS or RCS registered as a cardiac sonographer. New graduates must have successfully completed an accredited CAAHEP cardiac ultrasound program and must successfully complete RDCS or RCS certification within the first six months of employment to retain employment as a sonographer within the lab. Associate’s or bachelor’s degree preferred.

Experience: Two or three years of experience is preferred.

Job Knowledge: Expert knowledge of anatomy and physiology, ultrasound principles and practices as well as the ability to obtain high quality images required. Good observational and interpersonal skills required. Basic keyboarding skills required. Ability to handle multiple functions simultaneously required. Must be able to make decisions for scan quality and preservation of schedule. Must be able to maintain workflow. Must demonstrate ability to work with patients on a variety of levels. Consistently utilizes time between tasks for the benefit of the department.

Additional Qualifications: Must be able to tolerate frequent walking, standing, pushing, and pulling. Must be able to reach above shoulder level and endure occasional twisting and turning. Must be able to communicate well verbally and in writing. Must be able to hear at ordinary conversation level, and possess good visual acuity.

Licensure or Certification:
• Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) or Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS) in Adult Echo required within 6 months of hire.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required or Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification accepted.
