Short Description

The cardiac testing nurse will supervise cardiac testing (including outpatient Treadmill Exercise Stress Tests, Nuclear Exercise Stress Tests, and Pharmacologic Stress Tests) while collaborating with physicians to deliver high quality diagnostic testing. The cardiac testing nurse will need to be proficient in interpreting EKGs, assessing blood pressures, and symptoms. Demonstrates knowledge of current policies, procedures, and standards of care. Supervision of cardiac testing (including outpatient Treadmill Exercise Stress Tests, Nuclear Exercise Stress Tests, and Pharmacologic Stress Tests) Proficient in Reading or interpreting EKG’s during testing as well as comparing to previous EKG’s to look for differences.Pre-chart for upcoming tests by reviewing patient blood pressure, past medical history, and review latest note from cardiologist.Assess blood pressure before and during the test to ensure it is within appropriate medical parameters for the specific test administered. Work the stress machine while the patient is on the treadmill which includes taking action to record specific rhythms as identified by protocol (changes in rhythm, premature beats).For patients who are unable to tolerate exercise and require pharmacologic testing, RN to administer vasodilator via IV that mimics exercise (Lexiscan). Assess status and symptoms, reverse meds when necessary.Recover the patients from the test: Ensure EKG and blood pressure are back to baseline from where they started, assess patient for additional symptoms following the test (chest pain, document). If EKG or blood pressure vary from start or if patient is symptomatic, communicate with a physician if symptoms exist. RN needs to be able to recognize patient s/s and EKG changes that would warrant escalation of care and initiate as per protocol.
