Cardiac Surgery, Physician Assistant/Nurse Practitioner, UMass Worcester

UMass Memorial Medical Center is the largest academic medical center in Central Massachusetts and the region’s only Level I Trauma Center. The Department of Cardiac Surgery is seeking a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to join a high-performing, collaborative academic team.

Our Cardiac Surgery service includes 16 Advanced Practice Providers, 3 Cardiac Surgeons, and 7 Surgical Intensivists. This is a full-time (36 hours/week) position with a rotating day/night schedule, including weekends and holidays. The standard schedule consists of three 12-hour shifts per week.

Our team provides comprehensive, state-of-the-art cardiac surgical care to a diverse patient population, including:

  • Open and endovascular aortic repair

  • Coronary revascularization

  • Structural heart procedures

  • Mechanical circulatory support, including a destination VAD program

The clinical scope spans the full continuum of perioperative cardiac surgery care, from high-acuity tertiary and quaternary cases to routine surgical procedures. The program performs approximately 550 cases annually.

Advanced Practice Providers are integral to the service and serve as the first point of contact for patient care across the ICU, post-operative floor, and outpatient clinic. Surgically trained APPs provide operative first assisting and endoscopic vein harvesting in all cases.

Role Responsibilities

Under the general supervision of a physician, the Advanced Practice Provider will deliver comprehensive medical care, including but not limited to:

  • Performing and documenting complete histories and physical examinations, with thorough review of the medical record to formulate diagnoses and treatment plans

  • Ordering, interpreting, and reviewing laboratory tests and imaging studies

  • Participating in daily inpatient rounds; evaluating patients; reviewing diagnostic data; and documenting daily progress notes

  • Requesting consultations and communicating effectively with consulting services

  • Performing routine bedside and clinical procedures in accordance with approved Delineation of Privileges

  • Assisting in surgical and other invasive procedures, as applicable

Position Qualifications:

  • Master’s or Doctoral degree from an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program; board certification required

  • Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AGACNP-BC)

  • Current Massachusetts license

  • ACLS and BLS Certified

  • Preferred: 1–3 years of relevant clinical experience
