Full-Time: 40 hours/week

Monday - Friday

General Summary

Responsible for ensuring patient-centered care in the ambulatory and inpatient care settings for patients with cardiac electronic devices such as pacemakers, cardiac defibrillators, loop recorders and Holter monitors used for the diagnosis and treatment of cardiac arrhythmias. They will collaborate with Cardiologists, Electrophysiologists, Advanced practitioners, cardiac device technologists and other members of the patient care team to achieve optimal clinical outcomes.

Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

  • Enrolls, interrogates, and programs patients with cardiac electronic devices in the in-patient and out-patient settings.
  • Accurately identifies malfunctions, alerts, and sub-optimal device operations and follows appropriate protocols with making programming changes and notifying physicians.
  • Follows nursing process in assessing symptomatic patients and providing follow-through as needed such as discussing with Physicians, giving instructions to patients, making follow-up appointments, or taking patients to ED. Also triages the patients for remote alert notifications.
  • Responds to urgent/emergency clinical situations when interrogating patient in-clinic, using ACLS protocols.
  • Provides education to patients and their significant other regarding basic pacemaker function; follow-up care needed; medications; process steps for in-clinic visits and remote device transmissions; and other clinical care needs.
  • Documents in pacemaker management system (PaceArt) and electronic medical record (Epic) regarding testing, changes, and other identified care needs.
  • Proficient in identifying cardiac rhythms, pacemaker electrograms and operating programmers.
  • Performs incisions/wound assessments on new device patients and removes stitches/staples as appropriate.
  • Ability to scan pacemaker Holter monitors when needed.
  • May be pulled to Non-invasive Cardiology staff nurse duties per Manager’s discretion to meet the needs of all patients in the department. Remains competent in performing these duties including proficiency in starting IV’s; administering pharmacological stress tests; responding to emergencies; administering Definity contrast and microwave studies for Echocardiograms; performs non-invasive arterial studies.
  • Variation of duties may result based on the assigned customer care unit(s). This may include differences in the specific clinical skills required of the RN. Unit based skill lists outline expectations beyond the house wide RN requirements. SYS-NURS-L Nursing Education Requirements Policy outlines current certification(s) required for specific areas of nursing practice and is considered to be part of the job description.
  • In addition to requirements specified in the license and certification section below, current BLS certification for all areas of nursing practice is required.Current certification may be required for the following areas of nursing practice:Emergency Care Center – ACLS, PALSIntensive Care Center & MSCC Lead – ACLS, PALSL&D – ACLS, NRP, - Experienced L&D nurses will obtain within 6 months and new L&D nurses will obtain at 1 year of experienceNICU – NRPPEDS – PALSPCC/PACU/ENDO – ACLS, PALSProcedural – ACLS

  • Demonstrates strong communication skills with patient, family members, physicians and other health care team members.
  • Flexible to changing designation of responsibilities and able to adapt and prioritize.
  • Assists in training/orienting new team members.
  • Maintains mandatory in-services; CEU’s for RN license and any defined competencies for job position.

Qualifications

Minimum Education:

  • Diploma Program Required or
  • Associates Degree Required
  • Bachelors Degree Bachelors of Science, Nursing (BSN) Preferred

Work Experience:

  • 2 years Relevant experience. Required
  • 2 years Background in electrophysiology preferred with experience with implantable devices and cardiac nursing. Preferred

Licenses:

  • Licensed Registered Nurse Upon Hire Required or
  • Registered Nurse Multi State License Upon Hire Required and
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support Upon Hire Required and
  • Basic Life Support Upon Hire Required

Courses and Training:

  • Basic/Advanced Pacemaker. Upon Hire Required and
  • Cardiac arrhythmia/rhythm recognition. Upon Hire Required

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of device functionality, arrhythmias and internal electrograms.
  • Must be able to multi-task and efficiently perform job duties.
  • Must be customer focused and have strong communication skills.
  • Must be able to work independently.
