Cath Lab Nurse – Cardiac Catheterization Lab Nurse
Cath lab nurses, also known as cardiac catheterization lab nurses, are integral members of the cardiac care team. They assist cardiologists and other healthcare professionals during invasive procedures such as angioplasty, stent placement, pacemaker implantation, electrophysiology studies, and valvuloplasty. Their primary responsibility is to provide direct patient care, monitor vital signs, administer medications, and respond to emergencies during high-risk cardiac procedures.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Duties: Operate and understand specialized cath lab equipment, assist with hemostasis devices, and ensure all procedural checklists are completed.
Collaboration Work closely with cardiologists, radiologic technologists, and other team members to develop individualized care plans and coordinate patient care.
Professional Development Participate in continuing education, clinical audits, and professional development activities to maintain competency in cardiac care.
Required Skills and Qualifications
Clinical Expertise: Strong knowledge of cardiac anatomy, physiology, and catheterization procedures; ability to interpret EKGs and manage cardiac emergencies.
Technical Proficiency: Skilled in operating cath lab equipment and maintaining sterile fields.
Soft Skills: Excellent communication, teamwork, and patient education abilities; ability to work under high-stress conditions.
Education:
Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) (BSN often preferred)
Licensure and Certification: Current RN license and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.
Work Environment:
Cath lab nurses typically work in hospital settings, including large academic centers and community hospitals. The role involves exposure to high-acuity patients, potential infectious risks, and the need for rapid decision-making during emergencies. Many cath labs operate on a standard schedule with on-call rotations for urgent procedures.
