Job Description

As the Vessel Captain, you will be a vital member for one of our Silver Bay Seafoods Tenders that will be responsible to encompasses our Mission, Vision and Values. In this role as the Vessel Captain, you will ensure that the Tender vessel is seaworthy; fueled and supplied and the vessel is equipped with all needed gear to perform the tendering it is participating in. You will be responsible to make sure all equipment is tested and operational including the RSW system. You will be encouraged to hire qualified crew members and assign their duties as needed.  

Essential Functions/Qualifications 

The responsibilities of the position include the following:   

  • Take part in the hiring of all crew for your vessel. 
  • Daily operation of the vessel. 
  • Communicate with Vessel Manager and the Port Engineer to obtain vendor and shore support when necessary to minimize downtime and maintain maximum efficiency when engaged in Tendering operation. 
  • Have a working knowledge of your vessel in case there is a need to move or operate without normal crew.  
  • Able to operate the crane, turn on hydraulics, haul the anchor, pump out the vessel, run the refrigeration, or solve any unforeseen issues on board if the need arises. Silver Bay expects all their captains to be able to run the basic systems on their vessel. 
  • Oversee that the vessel and crew are maintaining the best quality of fish on board. This is essential to our company, and you must make sure fish quality is one of the main focuses while taking fish and maintaining temperatures to keep quality exceptional. 
  • Make sure all policies of Silver Bay Seafoods and the Coast Guard rules are adhered to. We assume all workers are free of illegal drugs every day while under our employment and not reporting for or being on the job under the influence of alcohol, narcotics, or drugs. 
  • Maintain quality fish handling on deck and temperature in the holds to ensure the company tenders set the standard on quality for all tenders. 
  • Assist and oversee ship repairs on company vessels. This may be a vessel other than the one you operate. 
  • Other duties as assigned to ensure the vessel and organization is fully supported and successful.  

Competencies 

To perform the job successfully, an individual should demonstrate the following functional and interpersonal competencies:   

Functional 

  • Vessel Operation: Extensive knowledge of vessel systems, navigation, and marine engineering. 
  • Seamanship: Strong seamanship skills, including navigation, anchoring, and mooring. 
  • Emergency Procedures: Proficiency in emergency procedures, such as firefighting, man overboard, and medical emergencies. 
  • Regulatory Compliance: Knowledge of maritime regulations, including Coast Guard regulations and international maritime laws. 
  • Cargo Handling: Understanding of cargo handling procedures for fish and other supplies. 
  • Crew Management: Ability to manage the crew to make sure they keep consistently occupied buying fish and maintaining the vessel. This includes painting, repairs, organizing supplies and parts on the vessel.

Interpersonal 

  • Leadership: Strong leadership skills to inspire and motivate the crew. The captain will set the culture of the vessel by the way they act. We believe the fishermen will have the Silver Bay Experience every time they interact with our company boats. 
  • Decision-Making: Ability to make quick and decisive decisions under pressure. 
  • Communication: Effective communication skills to keep the vessel manager and port engineer informed of needs for the vessel. This includes crew travel, personnel changes and parts needed. Any injuries or medical concerns need to be communicated to the vessel manager immediately. 
  • Problem-Solving: Skill in identifying and resolving problems, such as mechanical breakdowns or adverse weather conditions. 
  • Adaptability: Flexibility to adapt to changing weather conditions and operational challenges. 
  • Interpersonal Skills: Ability to build and maintain positive relationships with the crew and other stakeholders. Silver Bay holds our captains to a high standard and expectations. Education and Experience

  • Must be experienced as a Vessel Captain, Engineer, or have other Maritime and vessel knowledge. 
  • In-depth knowledge of cargo storage, vessel maintenance and navigation is required.
  • Valid driver's license required.
  • Marine Safety Drill Instructor certification required.
  • CPR and First Aid certified.
  • Proficiency in any/all software on the vessel, able to use it day-to-day or in an emergency is required.

Work Environment and Schedule 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and moving mechanical parts. The employee is frequently exposed to extreme cold. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places, fumes, or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, outside weather conditions, risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. Position requires presence on a fishing vessel in Alaska for the season, spending a significant amount of time on board the vessel in shared courters at sea.  

Physical Demands 

This role requires strength, stamina, and agility to navigate the vessel, perform maintenance tasks, and respond to emergencies. As the Vessel Captain, you may need to regularly lift and /or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Additionally, you will need to be able to climb ladders, and work in confined spaces, possess excellent balance and coordination to maneuver on a moving vessel, especially in rough seas. Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision and depth perception.
