Internship opportunities will begin in May 2027 and may be 12 or 16 months in length, depending on the requirements of the role and academic program.

To be eligible for the SECURE Student program, you must:

• Be enrolled in an internship program with an accredited post-secondary school.
• Be legally entitled to work in Canada by way of Canadian Citizenship, Permanent residency, or a valid work permit.
• Complete a Medical and/or Alcohol and Drug test if the role is considered safety-sensitive.

Your Opportunity at SECURE

The Capital Projects Intern will support the Capital Projects team in planning, coordinating, and delivering capital projects across SECURE’s operating facilities. Working alongside experienced Project Managers and internal stakeholders, the intern will gain hands-on exposure to the full project lifecycle, including scope development, engineering coordination, estimating, project controls, procurement, construction support, and project closeout.

This 12–16-month internship is designed to provide meaningful, progressive experience in capital project delivery. As the intern develops their technical knowledge and understanding of SECURE’s project management processes, they will have opportunities to take on increasing levels of responsibility, including supporting and, where appropriate, coordinating smaller-scale, lower-risk capital projects under the guidance of a Project Manager.

This role is based out of our Brookfield Office in downtown Calgary, Alberta.

The Team

The Capital Projects team works collaboratively across the organization to plan and deliver projects that support SECURE’s operational and business objectives. The intern will work closely with Project Managers and will interact with a variety of internal teams, including Operations, Engineering, Supply Chain and other business partners, as well as external engineering consultants and contractors.

This is a collaborative and learning-focused environment where the intern will receive mentorship and practical exposure to capital project execution. Success within the team requires curiosity, initiative, strong communication, attention to detail, and a willingness to ask questions and learn from experienced professionals.

Work Environment

This role combines office-based project work with exposure to SECURE’s operating facilities and active project environments. Day-to-day activities may include preparing and reviewing project documentation, participating in project and engineering meetings, coordinating with stakeholders, tracking project progress, and supporting activities at operating sites.

The intern should be comfortable managing multiple priorities in a dynamic project environment and working collaboratively with both technical and operational teams. Depending on project requirements, occasional travel to SECURE facilities or project sites may be required.

A Day in The Life

• Support Project Managers with the planning, coordination, and execution of capital projects throughout the project lifecycle.
• Assist with project scope definition and the development of project documentation.
• Support the preparation and refinement of preliminary capital cost estimates.
• Assist with project cost forecasting, budget tracking, and project controls activities.
• Maintain project risk registers, action item logs, schedules, milestones, and other project tracking tools.
• Maintain accurate and current project information and reporting within RAIL.
• Coordinate project documentation and support effective document control throughout the project lifecycle.
• Work with internal stakeholders and external engineering consultants to coordinate the development, review, and issuance of engineered drawings and other technical deliverables.
• Track engineering deliverables, project milestones, schedules, and outstanding actions.
• Assist with procurement activities, bid evaluations, contractor coordination, and supporting documentation.
• Prepare project status updates, reports, presentations, and other project communication materials.
• Participate in project, engineering, and stakeholder meetings and document key decisions, meeting minutes, and action items.
• Support project closeout activities, including turnover documentation, project records, and lessons learned.
• Develop an understanding of SECURE’s capital project management processes, standards, and project controls.
• As knowledge and experience develop, take on increasing responsibility for the planning and coordination of smaller-scale capital projects under the mentorship and oversight of a Project Manager.

Skills, Experience & Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in a Mechanical, Civil, Chemical, Electrical, or related Engineering degree program at a recognized post-secondary institution.
• Preference may be given to students who have completed at least their second or third year of study and are available for a 12–16-month internship or co-op term.
• Previous co-op, internship, summer employment, academic project, or other relevant experience related to engineering, capital projects, facilities, construction, or project management is considered an asset.
• Foundational understanding of engineering and project management concepts, such as project scope, estimating, scheduling, risk management, and cost control, is considered an asset.
• Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to manage multiple assignments and deadlines.
• Strong attention to detail and an interest in developing project coordination and problem-solving skills.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills with the confidence to work collaboratively with team members and stakeholders.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
• Exposure to Microsoft Project, Primavera P6, Power BI, Bluebeam Revu, AutoCAD, or similar engineering and project management software is considered an asset.
• Demonstrated initiative, curiosity, and willingness to learn and take on increasing responsibility.
• Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
• A safety-focused mindset and willingness to learn about the operational environments in which SECURE’s capital projects are delivered.
