As a Capacity Planning Engineer at eBay, you will play a vital role in influencing the financial architecture of our ecommerce platform. This is an outstanding opportunity to lead the charge in optimizing our resource management and ensuring flawless operations across our engineering stack.

Responsibilities:

  • Partner with platform teams to plan and execute capacity strategy across hybrid environments (on-prem Kubernetes, Azure, GCP)

  • Basic understanding of AI including tokens, LLMs, Vector Database, Prefill-Decode process, Semantic caching, scalability and sizing needed to collaborate with the platform team for capacity planning

  • Basic understanding of the Hadoop Platform, Spark, MapReduce, HDFS, Data Compression techniques, bottlenecks and sizing concepts needed to collaborate with the platform team for capacity planning

  • Partner with Search Platform and Engineering teams to help with basic capacity planning exercise around sizing index and traffic growth

  • Analyze infrastructure demand, utilization, and performance to forecast capacity needs and optimize allocation across compute, storage, and network resources

  • Coordinate capacity intake and resource prioritization, balancing requirements across data centers, supply chain, and network infrastructure

  • Monitor system performance and utilization to identify bottlenecks and underutilized resources; drive optimization initiatives to improve efficiency and cost

  • Design and develop dashboards and observability solutions using Grafana, Prometheus, etc. to provide actionable insights

  • Provide regular reporting on capacity status, trends, forecasts, and optimization opportunities to enable data-driven decision-making

  • Perform and contribute to root cause analysis of capacity-related incidents; implement corrective actions to improve availability, reliability, and customer experience

  • Evaluate and improve capacity engineering processes, tools, and methodologies to increase accuracy, efficiency, and scalability

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (Engineering, Platforms, Product, Data Center) to align infrastructure capacity with business objectives and upcoming initiatives

  • Conduct “what-if” and scenario modeling to assess the impact of traffic growth, new features, and infrastructure changes

  • Support large-scale, federated Kubernetes environments to ensure high availability, scalability, and efficient resource utilization

  • Contribute to tooling and automation for capacity planning, performance analysis, and workload optimization

  • Ensure infrastructure meets performance targets, SLAs, and business continuity requirements while maintaining efficient utilization

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in a technical field.

  • 2 years work experience as a software engineer, cloud engineer or capacity planning Engineer

  • Proven experience managing highly complex, technically challenging projects

  • Strong engineering, scripting, and data analysis skills; self-sufficient data analyst and technologist. Cloud experience is a plus

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters in engineering and CS degrees preferred

  • 2 years of pertinent work experience

  • Excellent oral/written communication, and analytical skills.

  • Outstanding organizational, prioritization, and multitasking skills.

  • Proven ability to work as a teamplayer, ability to work on tasks independently and deliver solutions in a highly complex, dynamic environment
