Canvas & Learning Technology Lead

Location: Hawthorn East, Hybrid

Employment Type: Full-time, continuing

Reports to: Executive General Manager

We are seeking a Canvas & Learning Technology Lead to manage, optimise and continuously improve Cairnmillar’s digital learning ecosystem, with a primary focus on the Canvas Learning Management System.

This role provides technical leadership across learning technologies, ensuring systems are secure, integrated, reliable and aligned with the needs of students, academic staff and professional services teams.

ABOUT THE CAIRNMILLAR INSTITUTE

The Cairnmillar Institute is a not-for-profit provider of psychological services and higher education, with a 65-year history of supporting mental health and training the next generation of practitioners. We offer clinics, short courses, vocational training and accredited postgraduate programs in psychology, counselling and psychotherapy.

In this role you will:

• Lead the administration, configuration, governance and continuous improvement of the Canvas LMS.
• Manage Canvas system releases, updates, testing and implementation of new functionality.
• Develop and maintain standards, documentation and processes that support effective and consistent use of Canvas.
• Lead the implementation and ongoing management of learning technology integrations, including student management systems, assessment tools, video platforms and third-party educational applications.
• Develop and maintain integrations using APIs, LTI standards and other supported technologies.
• Evaluate emerging learning technologies and identify opportunities to enhance learning and teaching through automation, analytics and AI-enabled tools.
• Build effective partnerships with academic staff, professional services teams, vendors and external providers to translate requirements into practical technical solutions.
• Develop reporting and analytics capabilities within Canvas and related systems to support compliance, quality, accreditation and decision-making requirements.

About You

You are a technically capable and service-oriented learning technology professional who can bring structure, reliability and continuous improvement to a complex digital learning environment. You are confident working across systems, stakeholders and vendors, and can translate academic and operational needs into practical technology solutions. You bring strong judgement, clear communication, attention to detail and curiosity about innovation in digital learning.

You will bring:

• A degree qualification in Information Technology, Computer Science, Education Technology or a related field, or equivalent demonstrated experience.
• Demonstrated experience administering and optimising Canvas LMS or a comparable enterprise learning management system.
• Strong understanding of learning technologies, educational systems and digital learning environments.
• Experience managing system integrations, APIs and third-party technology platforms.
• Demonstrated ability to analyse business requirements and translate them into practical technology solutions.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to diagnose and resolve complex system issues.
• Demonstrated ability to build productive relationships and influence stakeholders across academic, administrative and technical environments.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including preparation of documentation, training materials and business cases.

Desirable:

• Experience working in higher education, vocational education or another regulated learning environment.
• Experience with Learning Tools Interoperability, educational technology integrations and vendor management.
• Experience with AI-enabled learning technologies, educational innovation, project management or business analysis methodologies.
• Certification or formal training in Canvas LMS administration, or relevant technology, systems or project management certifications.
