The Canine Keeper is responsible for thecare of all dogs housed at the Veterinary Center. The Canine Keeper will maintain a clean and tidy work environment including kennels, grounds, and building.
Responsibilities:
Participate in afternoon rounds to keep up to date on patient status and tasks that need to be completed at the Vet Center.
Shut down and lock up the building at end of shift.
Clean and disinfect runs and outside yards.
Maintain cleanliness of all interior building spaces.
Assists Veterinarians and Veterinary Nurses as needed.
Transports dogs on and off campus as needed.
Prepare food and ensure all dogs are fed.
Medicates dogs and performs treatments as directed by medical team.
Care of post operative dogs, including basic wound care and therapy laser treatments.
Observe and report temperament and health details (i.e. vomiting, diarrhea, limping, etc.) to medical services team members.
Exercise animals in accordance with medical or quarantine status.
Weighs, grooms, and bathes dogs.
Uses proper dog handling techniques and kennel commands to ensure a safe kennel environment.
Have positive interactions with volunteers and interns, providing instruction and assistance.
Provide excellent customer service to visitors, creating a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Assist with janitorial supply inventory and preparation of orders.
Maintain excellent communications with all departments.
All employees are responsible for keeping the grounds of Dogs Inc safe and clean. Reporting or fixing safety hazards, picking up trash and assisting our guests and volunteers is required of all employees.
Language Skills: Must be able to communicate with all pack members, volunteers and visitors.
Mathematical Skills Must be able to measure water, food, etc.
Reasoning Ability: Must be observant and able to discern when a dog’s health issue needs to be reported to nurses or veterinarians.
Computer Skill: Must be able to navigate Dogs Inc’s intranet as well as correspond via email with other departments/pack members.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
Ability to walk, bend and remain on feet for long periods of time.
Lift up to 40lbs independently and up to 80lbs with another pack member.
Ability to restrain dogs for procedures.
Exposure to outdoor weather during a significant portion of each shift.
