Job Description

The University of Virginia Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Federal Work Study Program have openings to the UVA Cancer Center Undergraduate Scholars Program. If selected into the program the student will work in one of the School of Medicine’s Shared Resource cores under the mentorship of the director. In addition to working in the core they will be expected to attend 3 lectures on cancer research and 2 cancer research seminars each semester.


Successful completion of the program at the end of the school year may allow those students the opportunity to work full time in the core over the summer.
We seek work-study eligible students to work in the following Core units:

  • Advanced Microscopy Facility
  • Biorepository and Tissue Research Facility
  • Biomolecular Analysis Facility
  • Flow Cytometry Core Facility
  • Genome Analysis and Technology Core
  • Molecular Imaging Core
  • Molecular Immunologic & Translational Sciences Core

Duties may include or be limited to: lab safety training; basic lab techniques (i.e. pipetting, measuring and solution preparation); shadowing researchers and lab techs; scientific writing; data entry; experimental setup and clean up; attending lab seminars and meetings; and basic animal handling. Also, analysis for experiments involving cancer, reproduction, vaccines, and fundamental biological science.

Students who are interested in practical and theoretical flow cytometry technology and cell sorting. This position will be expected to perform steps such as sample processing, chemical modification, and loading the mass spectrometers. This work will require careful following of standard procedures and documentation. The student will get a broad understanding of research projects, analytical lab work, mass spectrometry, and research interaction with PIs and graduate students.

Pay range: $17-$20/hour

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
