Our Exploration division is growing, and we are looking for an Exploration Sustainability Lead to join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing strategic leadership, governance, and operational oversight for Sustainability across all Exploration activities in Canada, including Environmental Stewardship, Permitting, Community Relations, and Social Performance. This role ensures that exploration programs are planned and executed in alignment with Barrick’s Sustainability Framework, corporate standards, and applicable regulatory requirements, while proactively managing environmental and social risks, supporting responsible permitting, and strengthening Barrick’s License to Operate (LTO) throughout the Canadian Exploration portfolio.

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the primary sustainability interface for Canadian Exploration, working closely with North America Sustainability leadership, regulators, Indigenous Peoples, communities, and key external stakeholders.

  • Lead the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of sustainability strategies for Exploration across Canada, ensuring alignment with Barrick’s Sustainability, ESG, Environmental, Social Performance, human rights, and responsible mining commitments.

  • Provide strategic sustainability leadership and integrate sustainability considerations into exploration planning, budgeting, scheduling, and decision-making, while maintaining appropriate governance, standards, performance expectations, and KPIs.

  • Lead community relations and social performance, including stakeholder engagement, grievance mechanisms, community feedback, engagement registers, and early-stage relationship building. Identify and manage social risks and opportunities while strengthening Barrick’s social license to operate.

  • Provide functional leadership and oversight for Exploration Permitting across Canada, ensuring permits are secured, maintained, and complied with; permitting strategies, risks, schedules, and regulatory dependencies are proactively managed.

  • Ensure exploration activities comply with applicable federal and provincial regulatory requirements and Barrick’s Environmental standards. Oversee implementation of Environmental Management Systems, environmental controls, monitoring, reporting, and compliance programs.

  • Lead the identification, assessment, and management of environmental and social risks, including support for baseline studies, impact assessments, incident investigations, non-compliances, and corrective and preventive actions.

  • Maintain sustainability performance reporting and provide analysis of trends, risks, and opportunities to senior leadership. Support audits, Management Assurance Reviews (MARs), and other assurance activities.

  • Promote a culture of responsible exploration, ethical conduct, environmental stewardship, and sustainability leadership through training, knowledge sharing, and continuous improvement.

  • Collaborate closely with Exploration, Sustainability, Legal, Technical, Corporate Affairs, and other functional teams to support effective delivery of exploration programs and related logistical requirements.

  • Maintain EMS documentation, procedures, and requirements within the scope of the role.

  • Identify and manage environmental aspects, impacts, risks, and opportunities, ensuring effective controls, monitoring, compliance, and continuous improvement.

  • Report and support investigation of environmental incidents and non-compliances, including corrective and preventive actions.

  • Participate in environmental training, audits, and EMS improvement initiatives.

Qualifications:

  • Eligible to live and work in Canada required

  • Fluent in English; French proficiency preferred

  • Ability to Comply with all Environmental, Health & Safety policies, standards, and regulatory requirements required

  • Ability to identify, assess, control, and report workplace hazards and risks, including through Land Level Risk Assessments required

  • Ability to maintain safe work areas, equipment, and practices; use required PPE and promptly address or report unsafe conditions required

  • Ability to promote personal and collective accountability for health, safety, and environmental performance required

  • This role involves frequent travel, candidates based within a reasonable commuting distance of airports in Ontario or Quebec are preferred

  • Ability to work remotely required
