What You’ll Do:

The Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction (DRC) is seeking a motivated and detail‑oriented intern to join our Energy Conservation and Sustainability team. This team oversees energy, natural gas, and water conservation; land management; sustainability metrics; recycling programs; and other environmental initiatives across 25 state‑run institutions. This internship offers hands‑on experience supporting agency‑wide sustainability efforts and making a meaningful impact within state operations.

The Sustainability Intern will support DRC staff with a variety of sustainability and resource‑management tasks. Responsibilities may include:

  • Collecting, organizing, and analyzing data to support sustainability reporting
  • Conducting research and benchmarking against peer organizations
  • Assisting with the development of sustainability plans, reports, and presentations
  • Communicating with internal and external staff, partners, and stakeholders
  • Maintaining spreadsheets, dashboards, and organized documentation
  • Supporting the Energy Conservation & Sustainability Administrator, Recycling & Compost Coordinator, and Data Analytics Specialist with day‑to‑day tasks
  • Taking notes and preparing materials for recurring meetings
  • Tracking sustainability metrics through JadeTrack, RTS, and other data platforms
  • Assisting with Environmental Literacy education platform tracking, communication, training, and improvements
  • Creating institution‑specific reports to enhance communication and transparency
  • Supporting sustainability project planning, management, and implementation efforts
  • Researching grant opportunities, preparing application materials, and presenting findings that align with departmental mission and vision
  • Participating in Green Team activities and supporting sustainability‑related programming for incarcerated individuals
  • Preparing quarterly sustainability newsletters and monthly Green Team challenges
  • Assisting with and attending Sustainability Advisory Committee meetings
  • Conducting waste audits at institutions and collaborating with the Recycling Coordinator to improve waste‑diversion efforts
  • May travel to institutions across the state.

THIS IS A TEMPORARY PART-TIME UNCLASSIFIED POSITION WORKING 8 - 16 HOURS PER WEEK

THIS POSITION COULD WORK REMOTELY WITH OCCASIONAL SITE VISITS TO VARIOUS FACILITIES

Qualifications

MUST BE ENROLLED IN A COLLEGE OR UNIVERSITY AND IN GOOD STANDING.

**Must be enrolled in a college or university and in good academic standing, with a preference for 2 years completed and above.

Not required but would prefer:

Construction, Engineering, Business, or Information Technology major, TechNet, or SQL Queries

Construction/Maintenance experience

Ability to collect, analyze and present research data

Independent Worker requiring little guidance

(Will be required to produce college transcripts and current fee statement or class schedule.)
experience working with Microsoft Office
