Job Description

The Center for Advanced Mathematical Sciences (CAMS) at the American University of Beirut invites applications for the Musician in Residence fellowship starting in September 2026.

The fellowship aims to foster interdisciplinary exchange between musicians and mathematicians, with a view to developing musical works inspired by mathematical concepts, while contributing to the Center’s research and outreach activities.

Qualifications

The program welcomes composers and instrumentalists from Lebanese, the region and beyond who are keen to engage with the intersection of music and mathematics, exploring new possibilites in musical structure, performance and instrument design.

Selection will prioritize artistic excellence, conceptual rigor, and openness to interdisciplinary collaboration.

Musician-in-Residence Fellow: Expectations and Benefits

The Fellow is expected to:

- Develop an original creative work inspired by/in dialog with mathematical ideas,

- Participate in lectures and seminars and informal discussions at the Center,

- Organize public workshops, talks, and/or performances related to their endeavors.

Throughout the residency, the selected fellow will be in dialogue with mathematicians, scientists, and researchers who will offer feedback, share perspectives, and help develop the project's intellectual framework. The fellow will also work with an artistic advisor, who will provide guidance on the artistic development of the work and its evolving relationaship to the fellowship's research questions.

The applicant is not expected to have a previous background in mathematics. 

The fellow benefits from:

- Access to a workspace and technical resources;

- Stipend, with additional funding available for projects and workshops on a proposal basis;

- Co-pay health coverage under the University’s Health Insurance Plan.

Applications are due by July 30, 2026 Successful candidates will be notified by August 15, 2026 - Fellowship cycle: starting September 1, 2026, and ending May 31, 2027.
