The Center for Advanced Mathematical Sciences (CAMS), in collaboration with the Department of Mathematics and the Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) at the American University of Beirut, invites applications to the CAMS-Atiyah Postdoctoral Fellowship in Mathematics, ideally commencing in October 2026, and no later than January 2027.
The fellowship is named after Sir Michael Atiyah, honoring his life and works as well as his profound engagement with CAMS since inception, both as once Chair of its International Advisory Committee and as a generous mentor to its directors and associates. The fellowship benefits from a generous gift by the Simons Foundation in Sir Michael’s name.
It will be awarded biennially to a recent PhD in fields of mathematics which reflect the range of interests of Sir Michael. Special consideration will be given to applicants with a strong publication record who further showcase a dedication to teaching.
The fellowship entails a two-year appointment and will come with yearly research funds to support research assistants, conference participation and/or collaborative research visits.
In the context of the CAMS-Atiyah Fellowship, the successful candidate is expected to:
- Conduct innovative, cutting-edge, and impactful research in mathematics.
- Teach one course per term in the Department of Mathematics (courses and additional compensation to be coordinated with department/FAS).
- Contribute to the mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students.
- Engage in academic/outreach activities at CAMS.
- Submit a progress report on activities conducted one year from the start of the fellowship, then another by the end of the second year.
- Recognize CAMS in their list of affiliations.
Compensation and benefits:
- Stipend and research funds.
- Potential additional compensation for teaching duties (to be coordinated with the Faculty of Arts and Sciences).
- Co-pay health coverage under the University’s Health Insurance Plan.
