Job Description

Campus Safety Officers patrol campus 24-hours a day, year-round, to provide emergency and other assistance to University students, faculty, staff and visitors while exercising sound judgement to respond to complex situations. Officers independently document and investigate campus incidents, periodically in collaboration with Plymouth State University Police. Officers conduct property security checks. Officer schedules include evenings, nights, weekends and holidays as determined by the needs of the University, and officers are expected to respond to requests from the University to return to duty in the event of a significant emergency. All staff positions on campus support students and will be involved in student-focused activities.

Job Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Patrol University properties, providing routine assistance to students, faculty, staff, and visitors and conducting property checks.

  • Other duties include parking enforcement, permitting, crowd and traffic control, and event coordination.

  • Respond to a wide range of incidents under the direction of the University Police including crimes in progress, disturbances, disputes, alcohol and drug violations, sexual assault, domestic violence, theft, missing persons, trespass, and other criminal matters.

  • Investigating policy violations.

  • Work in conjunction with sworn law enforcement officials, review CCTV, or other technological data, and notify campus administrators when needed while maintaining an appropriate level of confidentiality.

  • May be required to testify in conduct, criminal, and civil hearings, and attend meetings, hearings, and trainings outside of their normal work hours.

  • Answer emergency and non-emergency calls for service; provide and limit access; monitor public safety radio traffic

  • Maintain a direct line of contact with University first responders.

  • Provide emergency notification to the University community when a significant emergency or dangerous situation occurs.

  • Investigate violations of University policies, including parking enforcement, access controls, noise complaints, alcohol violations, guest violations, prohibited items, unwanted persons, etc.

  • Enforce no contact orders and provide safety escorts.

  • Serve as first responders to alarms, fires, chemical spills, and odors of smoke or gas, working closely with local and state fire officials in response to issues.

  • Annually retain certification in First Aid, CPR, and AED and provide emergency medical treatment.

  • Provide nonemergency medical transports to local medical facilities.

  • Respond to incidents and accidents on campus that may lead to civil liability.

  • Serve as mentors and role models to students and provide crime prevention education (including substance abuse, personal safety, dating violence, sexual misconduct, and other topics) and services to members of the University community.

  • Works closely with other University departments as needed, including Title IX, Residential Life, Facilities, Custodial Services, Health & Wellness, and the Counseling Center to ensure a coordinated response to incidents.

  • Encouraged to assume roles such as organization advisors and participate in community events that provide support to students.

  • Every Public Safety Officer is a designated Campus Security Authority (CSA) as defined by the Clery Act.

  • Serves under the direction of the University Director of Public Safety and other University police officers.

  • Prior experience in Emergency response is helpful.

  • Able to climb stairs, stand for extended periods of time, lift 50 lbs

  • Clean Criminal Record Drivers License

Compensation Pay Range:

$12.86 - $21.11
