Job Description

The Campus Minister for SS. Philip and James, the Catholic Community at Hopkins, ensures the various aspects of ministering to the Johns Hopkins University campus are carried out. The people served primarily include Hopkins students (especially the Catholics), the parishioners of SS. Philip and James, and to some extent the staff, faculty as well as alumni and parents from the University. These people are served in the context of Saints Philip and James Church, which is a University Parish, through the Catholic Community at Hopkins (CCH), our campus ministry. The Campus Minister will work closely with the Dominican friars and the staff at SS. Philip and James, especially the Chaplain, the FOCUS missionaries, and the Development Coordinator.

The Campus Minister will work alongside and report directly to the Chaplain and ultimately the Pastor for implementing the evangelical mission of the CCH. The Campus Minister will collaborate with the Chaplain on the formation of our Catholic students and the evangelization of the campus to the saving Name of Jesus Christ. He or she will also enter into the particularly Dominican character of our University Parish.

This is a full-time (40 hours per week), exempt, professional ministry position. Night and weekend work is necessary primarily during the academic year. The Campus Minister will be asked to spend 50% of his or her time on operations of the campus ministry (organizing calendar, booking speakers, planning retreats, etc.) in conjunction with the Chaplain. The remaining 50% will be more direct ministry (work with student leaders and FOCUS, leading men’s or women’s groups, giving talks, events on campus, community service).

The position requires work in person, principally on the Hopkins and SS. Philip and James campuses and might require travel for such things as service projects, pilgrimages, campus ministers’ meetings and to Archdiocesan events. The Director will work with the Archdiocese of Baltimore’s Institute for Evangelization and be the liaison with other Campus Ministries in Baltimore and beyond.

Essential Functions

  • Assisting the Chaplain in the content and running of the yearly CCH Retreats (Fall, Men’s/Women’s, and Spring)
  • Finding creative ways to minister to Hopkins graduate students
  • Respond to the pastoral needs of students, faculty, and staff as needed.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned

Promote the orderly and smooth running of CCH by:

  • Managing the CCH calendar in coordination with the broader parish calendar.
  • Taking charge of CCH student-oriented communications, to promote our campus ministry and parish events.
  • Maintaining the general upkeep of the Campus Ministry facilities (Newman Center and Campus ministry offices).

Position Qualifications

  • Applicants must be practicing Catholics in good standing.
