Position Description
The Steel Band Teacher leads both the semester-long 8th Grade Beginning Steel Bands (one ensemble per semester) and the yearlong High School Steel Band, providing students with engaging and comprehensive instruction in steel pan performance and world music traditions. Responsibilities include teaching fundamental and advanced musicianship skills, directing ensemble rehearsals during class, developing performance repertoire, and fostering a collaborative, inclusive, and artistically rigorous learning environment.
The director works with students across varying experience levels, introducing beginners to basic steel pan technique, rhythmic feels, ensemble playing, and musical literacy while also guiding advanced students in the refinement of stylistic interpretation, improvisation, musical leadership, and high-level ensemble performance. The repertoire should include calypso, soca, reggae, Latin, jazz, pop, and contemporary world music styles.
The teaching schedule operates on a rotating timetable. While both ensembles may meet on the same day, class times will not always coincide consistently throughout the rotation. Classes are in 75-minute blocks.
The position includes preparation for approximately six annual performances, including:
- Two mainstage evening concerts held on weekday evenings from 7-8pm (one in December, one in May)
- Two school-day assembly performances (one in December, one in May)
- Two Saturday morning admissions performances (one in October, one in November)
Additional responsibilities include:
- Concert preparation and coordination, including attending corresponding production meetings.
- Music selection and arrangements.
- Make concert programs for two mainstage concerts.
- Instrument and equipment management.
- Maintaining gradebook (e.g. class participation, performance attendance, formative assessments) and Google Classroom, and Google Sites webpages.
- Attend two Back-to-School Nights (two Thursday evenings in September)
- Facilitate parents and student communication (concert dates, etc..)
- Assist in setting up and tearing down the steel drums and equipment for performances.
- Manage program budget tracking and submit expense documentation to the business office.
- Assisting with High School Steel Band auditions during March and April.
- Collaboration within the broader music department.
- Attending performing arts department meetings (usually once per month at 8am on a Wednesday).
- Meeting with the Performing Arts Department director periodically.
School year dates: mid-August through mid-July, school breaks include Thanksgiving (1 week), Winter (2 weeks), Spring (2 weeks)
Qualified candidates should possess a minimum of a four-year degree in Music Performance or Music Education and have prior experience performing in a university-level steel band program. The ideal candidate demonstrates strong ensemble leadership, organizational skills, cultural awareness, and a passion for inspiring young musicians through performance-based music education.
