Position Responsibilities
Conducts all operationsin accordance withthestandardoperatingprocedures specific to the camp location. Follows the plan as laid out by the Project Manager and Field Area Manager.
Directs all aspects of the field science program in conjunction with the Continental Field Supervisor and Field Science Manager.
Supervises camp staff and completes end of season evaluations on camp personnel in conjunction with the Continental Field Supervisor
Serves as safetycoordinator andensures that all safety related rules and regulations are adhered to by all hands. Communicates all safety incidents and near misses within the ASC safety protocols.
Ensures the camp facilities and equipment aremaintainedand operated safely, that the camp is tidy, and that waste is retrograded throughout the season. Responsible for all hazardous cargo identification, labeling, and handling prior to shipping back to McMurdo Station.
Assigns equipment support, materials, and science support priorities dailyin accordance withthe season plan
Mayassistthe Continental Field Supervisor with theselectionof camp staff during the off-season planning ifappropriate tothe campsituation, andmayparticipatein off-season planning ifappropriate tothe camp situation.
Prepares cargo for movement to the field, completes load plans and cargo prioritization with Continental Field Supervisor and Fixed Wing or Helicopter coordinators prior to deployment to the field.
Communicates professionally with their staff to relay information needed to be successful in their jobs. This includes, but is not limited to, staff meetings, performance appraisals, job requirements, structured training, quality standard procedures, and safety practices.
Maintains detailed records of camp operations including fuel figures, camp population, flight information, weather observations, and emergency response incidents.
Completes end of season report according to SOP.
Implements USAP's safety, environmental and health programs.
Supports requiredsearch andrescue missions as directed by the Field Area Leadership and the Emergency Operations Center.
Interacts with National Science Foundation and other agency officials, both over the telephone and in person, in a professional and tactful manner.
Responsible for implementing andmaintaininga safe workplace program and ensuring that safety is the highest priority in the workplace.

RequiredEducation, Experience, Certificates and Licenses
Bachelor’s degreeisrequired Anadditionalfour years of relevant experience will be accepted in lieu of a degree.
A minimum of four years combined experience in any of the following areas:weather reporting, equipment operation, cargo movement, fuel operations,skiwayconstruction, camp construction, expedition outfitting in polar climates or high altitude winter settings, National Park service positions, outdoor education, experience working with helicopters and fixed wing aircraft, guiding services, and/or logistics.
Two of the four years’ experience must be in a supervisory or leadership role.
Wilderness First Responder Certification
Incident Command System (ICS) 100 and 200 certificationsrequired(training offered free through FEMA).
ExpectedSkills and Competencies:
Demonstrated ability to work and supervise in remote and isolated environments
Good verbal communication skills, computer literacy, andproblem solvingskills
Preferred
Two seasons of experience working in Arctic/Antarctica with direct experience working in a polar field camp is preferred
Physical and/or Other Requirements
Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods
Successful completion of Medical and Dental examinations required by the NSF for deployment to Antarctica
Successful completion of drug screening and background check required by employer
Successful completion of Federal Background Check required by the NSF
Must be willing and able to lift and move items, parts, assemblies, and equipment up to the safety regulation maximum as required by the position.
Must be willing and able to perform physical activities including heavy lifting, climbing in and out of equipment, crawling, and working outdoors in extreme cold as required by the position.
Mustparticipatein community programs, such as “house-mouse” (chores), “daisy-picking” (cleaning-up around the station), recycling efforts & safetyobjectives
Valid Driver’s License issued in the United States
Must be able to obtain andmaintainfacility credentials/authorization. Note: US Citizenship isrequiredfor facility credentials/authorization at this work location.
