Job Description

Girl Scouts of Northern New Jersey is looking for energetic, fun, organized, and caring staff to provide memorable experiences to girls in a safe and engaging Summer Camp environment!

Lake Rickabear Day Camp sits on 332 acres of land including a beautiful 40-acre, spring-fed lake, perfect for swimming, pedal boating, paddle boarding, and row boating.

The Camp Nurse will supervise and be responsible for the general health and safety of campers and staff, in compliance with GSUSA, American Camping Association Standards and the NJ Youth Camp Safety Act.

Immediate Supervisor: Camp Director

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Work Cooperatively with GSNNJ Administrative staff, and rangers to ensure the highest level of safety, health, and activities for campers, and staff.
  • Maintains the camp health office in accordance with GSUSA, American Camping Association Standards and the N.J. Youth Camp Safety Act (Related to Health and Safety), and Center for Disease Control.
  • Administers first aid and medications as directed under the standing orders and camp policies.
  • Assists in obtaining Standing Orders when necessary.
  • Reviews all camper and staff health histories for each session and submits a medical report of pertinent information to the unit leaders, waterfront director, camp director, and kitchen staff.
  • Contacts parents via phone to discuss campers’ medical concerns.
  • Inspects the sanitation and safety practices throughout the camp, including kitchen, restrooms, garbage cans, and picnic tables daily.
  • Advises the Camp Director on all health and safety concerns of importance.
  • Maintains medical logs in accordance with American Camping Association standards, GSUSA, and Department of Health.
  • Maintains procedures for routine health care, first aid, and emergency medical care.
  • Is a key member of the Communicable Disease Response Team. Assists with development of Communicable Disease Plan prior to camp beginning and making changes as needed throughout summer.
  • Ensures Communicable Disease Plan (including Covid19) is implemented in first aid office and assists with implementation throughout the rest of the camp property.
  • Supervises full time health office staff
  • Must be always on site (first aid room) and accessible when campers are present.
  • Maintains first aid equipment for the first aid station, units, and waterfront daily.
  • Required participation in pre-camp training.
  • Requisitions necessary equipment and supplies: prior, during, and post camp season.
  • Complete opening and closing inventory of camp health office, equipment, and supplies.
  • Submits a written report and recommendations for the following season.
  • Must be able to stay and sleep over for at least two out of the three overnights
  • Must be able to stay at camp until the end of campfire for the overnights even when not staying for overnight
  • Performs other duties as may be assigned by the Camp Director.

Daily Rate: $275 per day. This is based on a 7.5 hour work day, which translates to $36.67 per hour.

Requirements

  • Registered NJ Nurse, CPR Pro, and have up to date malpractice insurance.
  • Must possess the ability to work in a camp setting and to inspire confidence in campers and staff.
  • Emotional stability is needed to meet emergency situations.
  • Must be able to stimulate interest in basic cleanliness, health education, safety practices and to recognize potential safety hazards, and have sound judgement.

Physical Requirements

  • Walking, standing, bending, stooping, reaching and ability to lift and move up to 30 pounds.
  • Daily exposure to seasonal weather conditions.
  • Must be able to work in a rustic camp environment with limited access to electricity, cell phone service and internet.
