Why this role matters:
As part of the Camp Leadership Team, Head Counselors are responsible for working with the Unit Head to oversee the staff and campers in a unit at Lessans Camp JCC, as well as planning and implementing programs within the guidelines set by the Bender JCC of Greater Washington.

Core Responsibilities include:
Leadership and Professional Development
- Mentor counselors in creating fulfilling group activities.
- Work with other Leadership Team staff on the arrival and dismissal of campers.
- Effectively motivate and delegate responsibilities to counselors.
Preparation, Planning, and Organization
- Fulfill all pre-camp responsibilities including assisting Unit Head with making group rosters, planning orientation sessions and activity plans.
- Assist in the creation and implementation of camp programs including electives, unit programs, special events, and camp-wide programs.
- Assist with tracking staff and camper attendance.
- Prepare and present agenda items at weekly staff meetings.
Supervision and Engagement
- Supervise and engage with all participants (ages 4-21) in programs and activities while under the position’s care.
- Substitute for absent Counselors as needed and requested.
- Rotate with other Leadership Team members to supervise staff at the pool at designated times.
Camper Care
- Collaborate with counselors, unit leadership, and the Health Room to manage camper health needs within your unit.
- Implement behavior support as needed in coordination with Unit Leadership, Inclusion Team, Specialists, and Yoetzet.
Communication and Attendance
- Attend pre-camp meetings including unit, Leadership Team, and other scheduled meetings.

Qualifications

Qualifications include:
- Ability to physically assist campers in and out of the pool.
- Ability to change soiled clothes as needed.
- Access to a device larger than a phone with reliable internet access for virtual orientation, meetings, and potential virtual programming.
- Ability to take initiative to solve problems and be willing to seek assistance in solving problems.
- Ability to get on the floor to participate and supervise activities.
- Ability to move equipment and supplies as required.
- Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds.
- Current certification in CPR and First Aid preferred.
- Prior experience working with school-aged campers of all abilities.
- Strong written and spoken language skills.
- Be accepting of, and sensitive to the diverse racial, national, sexual orientation, gender identity, abilities, religious and cultural backgrounds of everyone at Lessans Camp JCC.
- Willingness to be flexible and adapt to changes in schedule, responsibilities, and Lessans Camp JCC activities as needed.
Priority will be given to candidates who are available the entire camp season starting on June 15 going through August 7.

Additional Information
The salary range for this position is $5,700 - $6,600 (total pay for the regular camp season). Salary is determined based on experience including previous experience at Lessans Camp JCC.
