Job Description

Under the direction of the Health Supervisor, the Camp Health Assistant is responsible for the overall health/safety and sanitation of all people and places in camp. This position is expected to assist with all camp programs, as needed, throughout the year.

SALARY RANGE $29.00 - $33.00/hour

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Perform administrative duties -- complete logs, review forms, input data
  • Assists with the orientation to the health cottage and health protocols with all staff, volunteers, and participants
  • Maintain and distribute medicine, medical documents, etc for both campers and staff
  • Have awareness for both staff and campers in regards to safety, health, and support
  • Maintain supplies -- includes ordering, distributing, etc.
  • Maintain a clean and healthy environment in the Health Cottage, includes empty trash, clean bathroom, and provide clean linens for every person who needs to lie down.
  • Provide first aid supplies to all volunteers and staff.
  • Remain on call and available on site during scheduled shift.
  • Provide first aid treatment of minor injuries, bites, or medical emergencies.
  • Assist children with homesickness.
  • Maintain an organized and clean inventory of extra clothes, towels, sleeping bags.
  • Assist cabin leaders in dealing with bed wetting by washing them.
  • Attend camp meetings and trainings
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The physical demands of the position include:

  • Visual and auditory ability to observe and to respond to critical incidents and the physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency situation.
  • Ability to lead and interact in group activities and perform related physical skills.
  • Ability to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, or crouch. Ability to climb, push, and pull.
  • Ability to lift and carry objects up to 20 pounds.

Qualifications

  • Medical certification/ licensing options include: Emergency Medical Technician, Certified Nurse Assistant, Wilderness Frist Responder, or Wilderness First Aid
  • Gentle, patient, caring personality with the medical skills necessary to ensure the safety of all people in camp
  • Effective organizational and interpersonal skills including written and verbal communication
  • Works quickly, accurately and is timely in completion of projects
  • Model the values of the YMCA of Silicon Valley and the individual worth of children
  • Ability to lead and work within diverse populations
  • Knowledge and experience working in a residential camp setting.
  • Strong computer skills (word, excel, web based systems, etc.)
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred
