Marsh Risk

California Workers’ Compensation Consultant

Location: California Marsh Office (San Francisco, Los Angeles, Irvine)– Hybrid (3 days/week in office)

We are hiring a California Workers’ Compensation Consultant to join Marsh’s Claims Consulting Practice. This hybrid role (three days per week in-office) role blends deep technical mastery of California workers’ compensation law and claims practices with a consultative, outcomes-focused mindset. This position focuses on evaluating CA workers’ compensation claims, identifying and driving practical solutions, and improving claim and program performance. As a seasoned individual contributor, you’ll work independently to assess high-exposure, complex and litigated California Workers’ Compensation claims, collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, and help deliver measurable improvements and claim outcomes for clients.

What will you do?

  • Evaluate individual CA workers’ compensation claims, including complex and litigated matters, to identify root causes and improvement opportunities.

  • Lead strategy discussions and action planning with claim adjusters, TPAs, carriers, and client stakeholders to move claims to timely resolution.

  • Develop client-ready deliverables (reports, executive summaries, presentations, and recommendations) that clearly articulate findings, expected impact, and next steps.

  • Create and manage workplans for engagements or workstreams, track milestones, and ensure deliverable quality and compliance with practice standards.

  • Support implementation activities as needed (process redesign, KPI definition, settlement strategy, pilot testing, and change management).

  • Conduct audits and compare actual claim performance against industry best practices and client expectations.

  • Collaborate with practice leadership and cross-functional Marsh teams to escalate risks, align priorities, and surface opportunities to expand services.

  • Maintain continuous knowledge of CA jurisdictional laws, claims lifecycle best practices, and market trends to inform recommendations.

  • Contribute to knowledge management by documenting methodologies, templates, and lessons learned.

What can you expect?

  • High-impact, varied work addressing complex client claim programs in a fast-paced consulting environment.

  • Regular interaction with claim adjusters, mid-level client leaders, and opportunity for exposure to senior client stakeholders.

  • Collaborative environment with a diverse internal team of consultants, practice leaders, and Marsh distribution partners.

  • Professional development through challenging engagements, mentoring opportunities, and knowledge sharing.

  • A hybrid working model that balances in-office collaboration with remote-focused analysis and client work.

What’s in it for you?

  • Work for a recognized global brand serving leading commercial clients.

  • Opportunity to shape claims outcomes and influence client programs nationwide.

  • Career growth opportunities within Marsh’s Claims Consulting Practice and broader firm.

  • Inclusive culture with Employee Resource Groups, mentoring, and internal mobility.

  • Competitive compensation and a comprehensive benefits package beginning Day 1 (medical, dental, vision, disability, life insurance), plus retirement contributions and match after one year.

  • Flexible work arrangements and learning & development support, including tuition reimbursement and employee stock purchase participation.

We will count on you to:

  • Collaborate effectively with TPAs, carriers, claim administrators, and clients to achieve efficient, compliant claim resolutions.

  • Use strong problem-solving skills to identify pivotal issues and recommend pragmatic strategies that move claims to resolution.

  • Lead case-level strategy conversations with adjusters, TPAs, carriers, defense counsel, and clients.

  • Own the quality of assigned deliverables and ensure work meets the practice’s standards for accuracy, clarity, and impact.

  • Apply advanced knowledge of claims, insurance, and risk management trends to generate actionable insights for clients.

  • Challenge existing practices and propose innovative, evidence-based solutions that improve quality, compliance, and performance.

  • Communicate findings clearly and persuasively to both operational and management-level audiences.

  • Support teammates by sharing expertise, contributing to process improvements, and mentoring less-experienced colleagues.

What you need to have?

  • BA/BS degree in a relevant field or equivalent insurance/claims experience.

  • Minimum of 5 years’ significant experience handling California Workers’ Compensation claims, including complex and litigated files in both Insured and Self-Insured environments.

  • Demonstrated expertise with CA jurisdictional laws, claims processes, and resolution mechanisms.

  • Experience in claim management strategies that promote early resolution and effective settlements.

  • Proficient analytical skills and experience preparing client-facing reports and presentations.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with demonstrated ability to influence claim outcomes through clear recommendations.

  • Comfort with Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word) and common RMIS or claims systems; willingness to travel as required.

What makes you stand out?

  • Proven deductive reasoning and experience evaluating challenging claim situations to craft successful solutions.

  • Hands-on RMIS or claims system experience as an end user.

  • Prior leadership experience (2+ years) in a Team Lead, Account Services, or supervisory role with a carrier, TPA, or self-insured employer.

  • Practical experience with both insured and self-insured claim administration and regulatory requirements.

  • Track record of delivering results in fast-paced environments and managing competing priorities.

  • Ability to present complex concepts visually and verbally to senior leaders using Excel and PowerPoint.

  • A commitment to professional excellence and specialized expertise in the California workers’ compensation industry with industry recognized designations and certifications such as SIP, WCCA, CWCP, AIC, ARM

What success looks like

  • Clear, actionable case recommendations that move claims to timely, defensible resolution.

  • Quantified improvements on the claims you touch (reduced exposure, shorter lifecycle, successful settlements).

  • Positive working relationships with adjusters, TPAs, defense counsel, and client stakeholders who rely on your California expertise.
